Perch Question

Thanks. It'll be a little tight as the layout will have them needing to walk under the perch to get to the nesting boxes but I think I can get 20" or so overhead and have enough for them to walk under.

Couldn't find the two youngsters when I went to close up the coop a minute ago. After getting a light I found em. Guess they decided to get as high as possible!

We just recently added new perches to the back of our barn, about 4 feet off the ground.. The hens are not used to perches like the ones we have installed, the old ones were... well too small to be honest, especially for wintertime, as they could nearly wrap their toes around it. So we have larger branch ones. And these ones are quite thick. (Think round wooden cattle fence posts so about 7 inches in diameter.) The problem we are having is that they are using their old 'small' coop to get onto rather than the roosts at the back of the barn. Is it possible that the perches are either too high up? or it is too dark for them to find their way to the perches?? The small barn doesn't have electricity.

We had planned on keeping the old coop for new hens and or sick birds, but.. if it will help them take to the roost better, I can remove it. Perhaps their ladder isn't positioned right?
