Hi,

This is my first time to have RIR chicks, now it is about 12 weeks and start growing comb and wattle.
Is it a rooster?

I'm pretty new to this whole chicken raising thing, and I don't know if this is helpful or not but I have a ten week old Buff Orpington with a lot bigger comb and wattles.

So, I'm assuming that it probably could go either way for you, but it might be a pullet!! If your little fellow is 12 weeks and a male you should start to hear a crow soon. But you probably won't know for sure until that happens.
 
Thanks cmlew99! Let me pray it is a girl. It is not allowed to have a rooster in the backyard. If it is then I need to think how to deal with it....
 
that is a hen...as in other post comb and wattles would be much bigger...hens do get little wattles ya know...jeff
 
at 3 months if you cant tell hen from rooster then somethings wrong...heck this yr some started crowing at 11 weeks.....IMHO jeff
 
yes it is hard to tell,i have french blue copper manans,still cannot tell boy or girl,if one starts crowing then i will know,lol
