when to let broody go broody again

People often use sand as a base because it stays pretty dry and keeps flys down it is also a source of grit. If you were going to put a water bowl in when chicks are born, you need to have a shallow dish, with either clean stones or glass pebbles in the bottom to keep baby chicks from falling in and drowning. It does happen. Also baby chicks should not be eating layer feed or any extra calcium. At that time you could switch mama to grower feed & put out oyster shell in a separate dish - she will eat it if she needs it. The chicks shouldn't want it.

If you do decide to use sand, use a coarse river or construction sand with small pebbles of varying size in it, not a fine beach or playground sand as chicks can mistake the fine sand for food and ingest it, impacting their crops. Fine pea gravel also works well.

Glad you joined us!

6 weeks after sitting on a clutch that all went rot my one and only broody hen decided to give it a go again, and now is proud mama to 6 of the cutest chicks I have ever seen! So glad her second batch turned out it is so awesome to see it all unfold the way nature intended! I think having a super clean nesting box made a big difference this time around
