Would an auto motion detecting flood light detour an preditor? My thought was to put a motion detecting light on the coop and when a racoon or other preditor got within 20 feet or so the lights would click on and run them off....anyone trying something like this? Also, I found one that has a solar charge that is in my radar...check out the link and tell me if you think this is worth the attempt.

Thanks!

I can't answer about whether it will prevent predators or not. But we have not been happy w/ our solar motion light it didn't really work at all...and completely stopped in no time...we were advised against it. My brother in law is an electrician & he said better to save your money ppl are never satisfied w/ them. We were disappointed we spent the money on it. Can't wait hear opinions on if a motion light would help deter predators tho.

The problem I have with my motion sensor lights is that animals won't set them off. Even my large dogs (85 lb.) don't set them off. I have a solar light on the gate and motion sensor lights on the house. The solar light on the gate is garbage. Half the time it recognizes a person and turns on, but the other half of the time even my car won't set it off (much less a person).

The lights on the house aren't sensitive enough to pick up animals. Even my 85 lb. dog doesn't set them off, so there's no way they would go off for a raccoon or possum. I don't know if they make super-sensitive lights that can detect small animals? I guess if it was reliable then it might work to scare them off?

If you find a good light that picks up raccoons please post it - might be worth the try, but I'd only shell out the money if there were testimonials from others that it really did work. Good luck in your search!

The best deterrent for predators is to build your coop and your run like Ft. Knox...do not use plain chicken wire...it's worthless. You should use 1/2" hardware cloth...everywhere, and apron it at ground level so the digging predators (dogs, raccoons, fox, etc.) can't gain entrance:

All the motion detectors in the world won't be a deterrent other than building your setup correctly...think like a predator!! Do you have some pictures of your setup so we can help/advise you better?

I just seen the link and got to thinking it would maybe work....I have two really good ones attached to each end of the house and they have a sensitivity adjustment....Ive played with them and deer set them off so I put them back to a weaker adjustment....now im thinking about moving one to hit the pen area....we get a lot of deer so It may be on a bunch....just trying to scare the critters away....I havent had any issues as of yet with the exception of dogs and I think that is fixed.

not sure I would buy that one in the link either ....was curious who may have luck with them.

Thanks for any input.

I have a couple pics of it posted I think but will try and get another loaded more specific....what mine is, is a 6x12 chain linked dog run with the lower 1/3 having the 1/2 " hardware cloth....I know it should be over the whole thing but I am a work in progress...Im working on covering it each weekend. they FR most of the day and I have only seen a copperhead and my roo was directly ON TOP of it pecking at it. lol....anyway Im sure the preditors are prowling and will find us soon....hopefully I can get completed before then. I have the top fenced too with tin and a tarp over it.....I know a snake could get in but question the racoon at this point. this is before the hardware cloth.....I have nothing in the way of preventing a digger though....may do concrete.you may be able to see the hardware cloth on this one....I also have a tin roof now.

I have a motion detecting spotlight on my back deck. The coons got used to it, and all it did was provide light to help them find the best stuff in the garbage cans. Buuut, the light also alerted me, that something was on my back deck. Then, I would quietly open a back window, and BLAAAAAM, or really, more of a loud POP from my trusty .45. I got three of them within a month. So that's what a motion light will do for you, it will let you see what you are shooting at. It doesn't really scare anything away, maybe at first, but not for long.

Thanks Jack....the way my luck goes is when I see a preditor I have the gun in the house....when I have the gun I see fat non egg layin hens only. lol Thanks...I think I will turn my light to assist as you mention. maybe even get a baby alarm speaker or something.....my with already thinks I went off the deep end.

Well, if you've gone over the deep end then so have I....I installed a vTech video cam in my coop...the monitor sits right here on my computer desk, with the volume cranked all the way up so at night I can hear it all.....

Good for 1,000 feet outdoors, 250 feet indoors, so I'm good to go...wishing you well...hope you get those scumbags!
