Hi! I have 3 hens who were raised elsewhere and came to me 2 weeks ago. So far it's been great, 17 eggs and one catastrophe (fly paper) that we seem to have survived. I am loving my new ladies!

Alright

Welcome to BYC, Amy! Glad you decided to join our flock. Montana is a beautiful state. That is some real good laying your hens are doing. Do you know what breed they are?

Hi :). I have a RIR, an Ameraucana, and a Buff Orpington cross. I think she may be crossed with Ameraucana as well because the eggs are like that, but the owner/breeder wasn't sure. Her tail feathers are tipped black, but otherwise she looks like a BO.

I was shocked when I found the nest under a bush for sure! I don't think I'd have found it except the BO started acting broody so I tracked her down. I've never had hens before. They seem happy and communicate with me well. It's a lot of fun.

Generally  cooking oil will release you or feathered fowl from flypaper - I've been stuck myself

It's a terrible thing for sure! I used a dawn dishwashing solution first to help pry the paper off, then smoothed on the veg oil--that's how I found this site, googling what to do. I'd never actually held a chicken before, so I used a towel to wrap her up. I just sang to her and eventually the other 2 came in to watch. Even tho it was terrible for her to be so stuck, and for me as the responsible person, it was actually a nice bonding experience. She stayed on my lap for a while after we were done.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Great that you are enjoying your flock! Yes, fly paper catches more than flies!

I'm glad your enjoying your chickens. They are a lot of fun, aren't they? Are the eggs of your BO cross some shade of green?
