Chick with a birth defect? Will it kill the chick?

I recently hatched some eggs and one of the baby chicks seems to have some sort of birth defect. He/she can't walk, but lays on his/her side. The chicks legs are stiff and straight out in front of it and can't support any weight. The chick was born like this three days ago. It has a very healthy appetite though I have to prop the chick up in a nest made of a washcloth so it can eat and drink water. What's wrong with my chick? Am I wasting my time trying to keep the little chick alive if whatever is wrong will kill it anyway? If the chick does live, is there a way to make a sling to help it stay upright?

Thanks for any and all input! I'm way out of my league with this one!

You should search "splay legs" in chicks and see if this describes the situation. There are remedies like bandaids that really do work to correct this problem. Thing is, it has to be done as soon as problem is identified to help the chick. You could still give it a try for several days and see if it works.
