Looking for other BYC people in the area.
I have Amerucanas and Brabanters. Which are both my favorite must be their beards.
Seeing who else is in the area.
I'm in unincorporated Jeffco, surrounded by Arvada. All of my neighbors have chickens, so I wouldn't be too surprised if some/all of them were here on this forum. I have four RIR's and three Star crosses. I like the Stars more...more personality, and bigger eggs, too. I got them at maybe 7 weeks...they'd just feathered out...and soon saw that one was a rooster, so I traded him for another hen. Big mistake. That hen is an outcast to this day, and she's smaller than the others and frankly a little weird. So when another "hen" turned out to have a pee-pee, I just sold him for $5 to Wardle's. Wow, are cocks ever dicks! I hated that bird, since he'd harass the hens nonstop from dawn 'til dusk. So the good folks at Wardle's threw him in a cage with two other roosters, and they immediately started de-feathering him. He was terrified. And I was, like, "Now you know how it feels, buddy." My hens are much happier now, and they follow me around like dogs.
The crowing of roosters is like a train horn...great to hear at a distance, bone-rattling to hear up close. Just my .02. :)
So far I split my chicken-related purchases between Wardle's (closest place with straw, mom-n-pop feel to it), Murdock's (slightly lower prices), and Golden Mill (great "Scratch Bar" and an excuse to have lunch at D'Deli). Anyone have a favorite supply store?
Roosters...ugh. I sold my rooster to Wardle Feed Supply for $5. Best trade I ever made! They use the roosters they buy for breeding, so it's not like they get turned into a pot pie or anything....
Hi Kristin! I'm at 80th and Alkire...not too far away. I try to build up a longer list of chicken supplies so I have an excuse to visit Golden Mill, but that rarely happens. I just want to support the little guy, since Murdock's has about 30 stores in CO, WY, and MT. I purchased a couple bags of wild bird seed at Costco -- it's about $12 for 40 lbs. Seems to be working okay. I've never been to a chicken swap, mainly because I don't want to get any ideas about expanding my flock. What breeds and how many birds do you have?
Wow, that's quite a collection! Do you have a farm, or just really understanding neighbors? What do you do with that many eggs?!?! Nice coop...looks like it could survive a tornado. My hens (just 7 of 'em) have decided that they'd rather be hungry than walk across 10 feet of snow to get to the food. Crazy birds. I blazed a little trail for them, cause I'm nice like that. haha
