I recently added 2 Indian Runners to my garden for pest help. I'm a first time duck owner so I know little other than what I've been researching online. My question is this.... my garden is in a low spot and in order to keep excess rain water from flowing through the middle of it I've ditched around it's perimeter. The water collects in a low corner and the ducks spend a considerable amount of time messing about in it. They drill into the mud walls, constantly looking for whatever and doing whatever it is that ducks do. I don't have a clue but they're fun to watch. The water which would otherwise be stagnant if it weren't for their constant mucking about in it, is looking pretty ugly. I wouldn't say "foul" but it ain't pretty. Are the ducks in any danger here, are they fouling their own "pond" to the degree it could be harmful? Thanks for any input!

Thanks.... those were my thoughts too not knowing any different. I pumped it out yesterday just before a big storm so it's filled back up again with fresh water. It'll be a chore trying to keep it cleaned I can tell.

Yeah...I have 2 Runners also and they love any and all water...puddles, sprinklers, their kiddie pool...anywhere water has collected in portions deep enough for them to dabble their bills in...just be careful because their "drilling" can be destructive too...ducks sure are a hoot though

Does it ever dry out? you could flush it now and again but frankly i don't worry much about that stuff.. my ducks love to puddle through low laying waters.. even the babies will do so.

Okay so then it does dry out then i wouldn't worry to much, i have areas like that too. they drill for grit, insects etc... totally natural, normal behaviour and starts really young too.

Thanks folks.... appreciate the feedback. On another note, I'm not clear on what they're cold temp limits are. I'm in western Pennsylvania. Guess I should search first and then start another thread.
