IRS Phone Scams

I didn't get any. But I don't think I'd fall for such a scheme. For one thing, I learned that IRS never initiates contact with the taxpayers for delinquent taxes. So if the caller says otherwise and tries to threaten me, I'd slam the phone down and break his eardrums!

I'd also report the call to http://www.callercenter.com. I read that a lot of people go there to report suspicious calls. So what I'll do, I'll post the scammer's phone number and share everything the caller said so others are warned ahead. I think it really helps when we spread info on scam calls. Just like what others say on that site, "you never know when your post might save someone from falling to the scam."

I called the IRS call center and got this message (paraphrased), "Due to an inordinate amount of reports of phone scamming our mail box is full. Please go to the IRS website to report if you have lost money in this scam."

Next scam - got a phone call from someone with an Indian accent - "I am from ******* computer service. We have detected problems with your computer that need to be addressed immediately. Go to your computer, and I will tell you what to do." I think not! I may be old, but my brain is still at least semi functional.

I assume landline? We still have two landlines - we never answer until a message reveals it is someone we know. The phone companies (Local Exchange Carriers-LEC's) have been running their own $20 billion a year scam on customers since the implementation of the 1996 Telecommunications Act (language to `help' customers by allowing one LEC to `add' their charges to the customer's LEC's bill every month - make a call from Frisco/Seattle back home using another service and, presto!, charge shows up on regular monthly bill - didn't work out that way). The NSA has nothing on theses guys and their data mining/aggregation: And, even though the FCC has held two investigations of this behavior - the phone companies use their lobbyists to Congress $$$ to "light touch" any changes to the law's language, i.e., "we'll be sneakier about it". An opt-in choice on contract (consumer actually has to sign-up/not automatically be signed-up `opt-out') is too much trouble, i.e., `don't mess with our business, Feds! - this `skim' is our thing!!!

Always `opt-out' of all additional services when signing any contract for a service: EX: (slamming/cramming - how to get a full refund: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/621428/phone-cramming-how-to-beat-the-scam ).

Phone BS can be blocked/ignored Two summers ago a well groomed woodsy type in a brand new top of the line Ford pickup appeared at the front door `Gee, we have some asphalt left over from a job we've been doing up the road for one of your neighbors - we'd be happy to asphalt your driveway'. I sent him away. Couple of days later in the local paper: Hot tar gypsy scam: was `working' for neighbor - charged her twenty thousand to slap remaindered roofing on her house. So I called the Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs and gave them the License plate number from the guy's pickup (outside cam of driveway is handy).

Currently, as of report, yesterday, there is someone arriving at homes claiming to be from the County Animal Control Authority (always ask for name and number while they're outside and call the office and verify).

Landline - yes - only answered because son works in DC, and I thought that it might be him. The 'computer repair' call was a persistent caller that I finally answered out of curiosity. We also had the 'left over' asphalt scam pulled on us several years ago - 'No thanks.' If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There's a lot of truth in that statement.

There are lots of scams out there. Beware. I got one exactly like Sourland did. I also got one years ago. It was a letter from California that stated that I had won his and hers quads. The letter had beautiful pictures showing the quads and listing all the specs. All I had to do was send them $500.00 for shipping them cross country. There was a phone number listed in the brochure. I called and explained that I would be visiting California soon and would like to pick them up..........funny I must have had a bad connection because the phone went dead.
