So something broke into my duck house and my chicken coop yesterday. i lost 4 hens, 1 duck, and 1 rooster. everything it killed was under 4 months. i want to know what it was. somehow it squeezed through the gap under the door which is 1"-2" tops. it killed 1 duck and battered the other 2 ducks, and killed the 4 chickens and the rooster. but it broke their necks and chewed on the necks, but it did not touch the rest of the body. one of my hens is actually missing part of her scalp, she lived, but a chunk of her head is gone. please help me figure out what it was to better protect my hens?

Sorry to hear of your loss :(

A weasel or small raccoon is possible - they can fit into incredibly tight spaces - especially when a meal is on the other side.

After seeing raccoon activity on the game cam monitoring my duck pen, I went back and made sure no opening or gap in the pen was larger than 1/2".

Found I needed to add some lengths of 1x3" behind the door gaps to seal it up well.

This doesn't bring your little's back, but could help prevent future losses.

Hope that helps...

was there any foot prints out side the coop? that would help to fine out what animal did it . sorry for your lose .

Sounds like a mink to me eating at the neck. they can squeeze through a very small opening, very sorry for your loss, and hope you get that opening fixed before night fall because it will be back.

so i have spent most of the day thinking on this, i am out of town this weekend so i have to take care of this today. i am going to move the ducks into the coop for the weekend with extra water. and i will be putting chicken wire on the bottom of the door and keeping it held there with cinder blocks. hoping this will take care of my mink/weasel problem. thanks everyone!

Use 1/2 inch hardware cloth, minks and other weasels can get threw chicken wire.
