we have 11 chickens . 10 hens 1 rooster. One of the hens is afraid to get off the roost by herself. I have to lift her off so she can eat and drink, if another chicken comes in the hen house while she is eating she will go back up on the roost. She will not leave the hen house to go outside. We have put her outside. she stays close to the hen house. we have put a couple hens out with her into the yard. She will hide under a bush. She is terrified of the rooster.. Not sure what to do about this She is a Wyandotte and is 5 months old. same age as the others , also raised with the others... Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks for any help !!! Evagay.

All my chickens hate roosters when I get a surprise from the place where I get my chickens. My hens, especially the 4 year olds, will stay on the roosts so the male can't mount them, I always find a home for my roosters. If your heart is set on having the guy then possibly keep them in separate areas or let her out when she can be alone.

I do believe the rooster is a big part of it... Yes he was a surprise rooster for us too.... The other hens have dealt with him fine. I do find his interaction with the other chickens interesting. He makes a funny noise around them when everything is ok but if he thinks there might be danger a foot he makes a different sound and they all come running.. The other day they were all out in the yard and three very large birds flew over. He stopped eating and kept twisting his head around watching them until they left the area before he would go back to eating.... But yes we have considered getting rid of him. Maybe we will separate him for a while and see if it makes a difference with her... She is afraid of the other hens too but maybe she isnt sure which is the rooster right off i dont know... Thank you anyway for your input. Something i will for sure think about and try . If it makes a difference we may have to say goodbye to him.. :(
