I have a 4x8 coop with 10 chickens. I know the 3-4 sq ft per chicken rule, but someone has asked me to take in three more from a rescue situation. Do you think they will be ok? They have a 16x10 run but unfortunately do not free range based on our location and predators :( I hate to turn them away but don't want to take them if they will not be happy. Thoughts?

I would be careful about taking in rescues if you don't have a place to quarantine first (as in, many yards between pens, etc, and for at least 4 weeks). I can't really answer to the sq. feet per bird question since I free range mine, but I would be very careful about getting 3 chickens that could have parasites that would be transferred to my birds.

I meant to reply to you...but you're definitely right. I have a makeshift pen for them that would be temporary but it couldn't be long term.

Personally, if it were me, i wouldn't do it. You're crowded as is. I don't know what your winter situation is, and if you are able to free range on a daily basis. The potential for bringing in disease and parasites is great, and it will stress your existing flock. Great to do a favor for someone, but, you have to be a good steward of the pets you already have. Now, if your temporary housing available for quarantine could be made permanent for the 3 rescues, that might work, but that would double your work load in tending your flock(s).
