The Adventures of Daisy the Silkie Chicken

After counting all of the chickens,..... as usual, one was missing.
My first thought was, "Ok. What's Daisy up to now?"

Well, I didn't have to wonder long because my husband told me that he'd just seen one of the chickens run around to the other side of the house.

As I cut through to exit another door, I saw Daisy there outside the window.
For the longest time, she had her eyes fixed on the deer on our hillside. It was only after my husband called her that she turned and went back to the flock.

Actually, up until a few weeks ago, I was convinced that Daisy was actually a little rooster. Although she has always been smaller than my other silkies, because of her behavior, I was expecting her to start crowing at any moment!!
Now, ever since her first encounter with the deer on the hillside, around that same time towards evening, I've caught her strolling around the house. Along the way, she'll ignore anything that I'd guess she'd want to eat, but she'll go to that same spot and look up on the hill. She'll stay awhile and eventually come running back. It's pretty funny.
 
  • Actually, the other day, I caught her working her way up the small stairway that leads up the hillside where the deer lives.
  • The problem with that, however, is that --along the hillside-- there are also deer ticks, raccoons, coyotes, foxes, owls and hawks!!!
  • So, just as a precaution, I made a barrier to prevent Daisy from venturing off too far. Now, to make up for that, her latest favorite thing is to run right into the house through the front door!! It's not a timid, look both ways type of entrance, but more of a surprise 'run right in' type of thing. (My husband goes, "What's that chicken doing in here again?"
  • Anyway, there's never a dull moment with these chickens. I even want more!!!
  • In fact, any day now, I'll be receiving some paint silkie eggs for my broody hen. If all goes well, it will be our first time going through this process of hatching eggs and raising chicks.
  • All I can say is, thank goodness for all of you BYCer's out there for all of your knowledge and experience!!
