Rooster to protect hens

A rooster can't protect a flock at night. He's as blind and vulnerable as the hens in the dark. A raccoon has perfect night vision.

A polish rooster isn't much of a protector anyway because of limited vision especially overhead.

IMHO, a Mediterranean breed is an excellent flock protector.

This is my flock protector of choice for daytime predators. I've seen them take a hawk out of the air but at night a raccoon or mink will easily kill them.

How is a Welsummer rooster for protecting?

This raccoon came during the day a couple of days before we caught it and I heard no noise, like they were screaming or anything.

I have a Blue Wynadotte Rooster and he does an awesome job. He won't let many people in with his girls. I have no problem and if someone comes in the coop and run with me he most of the time will leave them alone. He will attack our dog thru the fence when he comes near the run. He lets them know when food is there and when snacks are there. He lets them start eating before he eats and one time I was holding one of his girls and he thought I was hurting her.He did peck me to let go of her, but he isn't aggesive towards me. He does his job but is not mean just to be mean. He protects them and I've seen him take care of them. If the Lord is willing I will always have a Roo.
