Bright GREEN Liver/Organs?

We were processing some of our cornish X today and one of them had a VERY bright green liver. I'm talking the greenest grass color. It was the color of the organ itself, and it seemed huge- like I wasn't sure if it was all just the liver. I wish I had taken a picture of it because it was the weirdest thing.
Everything else was still intact including the intestines and the gall bladder- nothing had been broken, but inside was just a whole bunch of bright green liver-looking organs.

Is this okay? What could have caused this? Do you think the gall bladder might have ruptured via an injury (perhaps my 3 yr old) throughout the chicken's life and stained it ALL green somehow? Nothing else was effected.

Also, our chickens are all free range. The cornish hang with the layers and everyone gets fed feed (general poultry feed) in the morning and then free ranges all over for the rest of the day. I feed them a few handfuls in the eve to bring them into the coop run.

There was a thread on chowhound a couple years ago about cornish X type chickens having green spots in the middle of the breast. Apparently the meat tasted fine, but the consensus was that sometimes they grow too fast for their blood vessels to keep up and parts of the body stop getting enough blood, and eventually turn green, IIRC.

Green spots in muscle is a sign of 'green muscle disease' (that's what it's called!) and is due to necrosis (death) of the tissue (that area) due most commonly to lack of blood flow. This happens in cornish x's and turkey's because their muscles grow so big that with exercise/stress they actually cut off the blood supply to the other muscles.

Now with internal organs, this is probably something different. Most likely bile staining or liver failure.

In general, if something doesn't look right, isn't the same colour, has a funny fluid filled pocket or a weird track/line running through it.... DON'T EAT IT. OR if you are gonna eat it, cook it really really really well.

As long as you cook something really well, it won't hurt you.

Same goes for feeding weird parts to your dogs... don't do it, and if you are gonna anyway, please cook it!

good luck!

Yeah it was really, really weird, like a bright forest green liver. Im thinking perhaps it was from an injury where the bile was turning it green while she lived. They try flying off the roosts out the coop door all the time, or off the deck.

I saw this...instantly turned to Google.
