Hey Everyone-

This is actually my first post here on BYC and I thought I would share my new chicks that I just got today! I got four different breeds, and I am pretty excited to have my own eggs in about 5 months. Currently I have a white silkie bantam, New Hampshire Red, Dominique, and an Ameraucana! There are some pics below =]

Anyone have any advice for a new chicken owner??

Hope everyone is having a great sunday, and thanks for the help!

Thanks! I know they are going to grow fast, but hopefully they will be both nice as well as pretty when they are all older!

I am making sure to handle them all the time. It's funny because I just got them this afternoon and they are already following me around when I let them play in the backyard.

I am pretty sure the Silkie is younger than all the others...I was worried that maybe she was sick because it seems like all she does is sleep. But, that's what babies do right? She still chirps and everything, and will wake up for a bit and look super lively! You think she is okay?

I am new at this too! I just got my chicks about 6 weeks ago, so I am not sure but I did have a couple that liked to sleep more than the others!!! It is so much fun to watch them grow and to see their personalities!! I still have one that sleeps more than the others, its a hen so I hope this means she is not lazy!!

I am new to this as well. My 5 babies are now 6 weeks old. My DH and I are really enjoying our new venture. At this point, it's looking like we've got some adorable new pets, and the eggs will just be a bonus! Good luck!!!

Do your chicks like any fresh veggies or fruits more than others?

Congrats on your new pets guys! It's so funny because it's only been a day but I already feel like they've imprinted on me. Every time it come into the room they run up to the side of their bin where I am and start pecking as though they're saying "Come pick me up!"

Yes, we are totally attached to them and they get very excited when they see us or hear our voices. The only treats I've given mine are craisins (dried cranberries) and dried mealworms. I also grow some wheatgrass for the cat, and I give them some of that occasionally. I didn't try any treats until they were about 3 weeks old and I had to break them up into small pieces at first (the cranberries). This past week (they are 6 weeks old now) we gave them a June Bug -- they went nuts!! We saw first hand the source of the phrase "like chicken on a June Bug." You have to give them grit if you're going to give them treats. I got some Manna Pro Chick Grit from TSC.

Chicks will sleep anywhere and at anytime they are amusing. My last batch of chicks I swore would be walking and "Ploop" fall over for a nap. I didn't handle mine alot as the older girls teach them that I am the treat and food dispenser lol. Enjoy your chicks.

:D

Absolutely adorable. I'm also new to all this. I have 5 girls that are about 6 or 7 weeks old and then I have 6 other girls that are only a week old. They do grow up rather fast and before you know it they are all feathered out. Have fun with them and enjoy the different personalities you are sure to end up with.
