Hello everyone,

My first post on any forum EVER!

Myself and my wife Catherine have just moved to a new house in the Irish countryside and, having lived most of our lives in suburbia I thought it would be a great idea to fulfill a lifelong dream of Catherine's and buy her two pygmy goats. They were a great sucess and still are. So I then decided to purchase 4 Rhode Island Reds, which I had been referring to as Rhodesian Ridgebacks (thus proving my absolute lack of knowledge of our feathered friends ). One has succumbed to the natural instincts of one of our West Highland Terriers (our first lesson learned) whilst the others appear to be ok. I just wanted to say that it is great to find a site like this to help and share info, which I am sure I will be doing in the near future. Also, just to clarify that I am not a bad speller, I just left my glasses downstairs and am too proud (lazy) to go down to get them!

Good morning and welcome to BYC! You just touched on 3 of my favorite animals...Westies (mine was the best dog I ever had, RIP), Rhode Island Reds, and pygmy goats. Hope you visit often and share your stories.

You've come to a wonderful place to find and share information. The BYC site has a lot of information (check out the Learning Center articles if you haven't already). Also, there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here in this community so feel free to ask anything.

Good luck in your new place, glad to have you here!

Welcome to BYC! I'm a newbie myself (2 months into this) :) The people here are great and so far I have been able to find answers to all of my questions. Good luck on this journey, it has been a positive experience for me. I have 2 Partridge Brown Rocks, 1 Silver Spangled Hamburg and a Silver Laced Cochin, all hens and so far that is a plenty for our household and not so many as to be overwhelming for a newbie. I adopted them from a neighbor so they were already laying and I get over a dozen eggs a week (they are spoiled and happy for sure).

I love being a little more self sustaining with these small changes and it keeps me active!!

Welcome again--from Virginia, USA

Glad you joined us! I've spent some time in Ireland, in West Cork, and I love that place! Amazing country and so beautiful. I'm definitely going back there as soon as I can. I see you have goats as well as chickens, have you checked out our sister site, BackYardHerds.com? Enjoy the site and your chicken adventures!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sorry about the one you lost to the dog. But we do welcome you to our flock and hope you enjoy this site!

Welcome to BYC, Eoin and Catherine! Glad you decided to join our flock. My wife and I spend some time in Ireland for our 37th wedding anniversary (my ancestors are all Irish) and we loved your beautiful countryside. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
Cheers.
