I am planning a mandarin duck aviary. Will mandarins use a small chicken coop-has windows, ventilation, ramp to entrance door-to get out of a snowstorm or bitter winds? Or would I be better off tarping the aviary? I intend to put 2 mandarin nest boxes in the pen; do they ever use these as shelters in bad weather? (Planning on just one pair) I live in northeast PA and deal with bitter cold, winds, snow. Thank you all in advance for your help!
 
Mandarins are very hardy birds. Most important to successfully wintering them is keeping open water available even in the coldest weather. There's lots of ways to do that- aerators, heaters, running water, etc. - choose the one that works for you.

If you have open water and some sort of wind break, you shouldn't need to lock them up or wrap the enclosure in plastic.
 
That'll work great. The ducks won't burn themselves, it doesn't get hot to the touch so long as it stays under water.

Mine do like to use their shed in the winter. They have the option if staying outside, but I think they like to get out of the wind. I used a heated dog bowl last winter, but we put a pond in this yr, so I'll use a livestock tank heater also.
