Eye Getting Worse

Chicken (17 month old) started out with keeping her eye shut a week ago. Her eye now looks like this. We started treating with boric acid thinking she had conjunctivitis with no improvement. I moved on to Vetericyn Opthalmic gel and no improvement. I read in a different article I could use colloidal silver in her eye but am afraid to do anything else until I have a better idea of what is going on. She has been segregated from the flock and she just sits on her perch and sleeps. She does some foraging when I let her out but she is not as active. The eyelid is not swollen and I cannot see any worms. Any help is appreciated.

Hi. You've mentioned all the topicals you've tried. But if she is acting a bit pokey it's probably because she needs antibiotics. I have one right now that I'm treating. The antibiotics are kind of hit and miss for me. I tried sulfadimethoxine which worked for the hen a year ago but not this current rooster. I'm trying LS-50, but I'm not so sure it's working either. So I'm going to order Tylan . Antibiotics each have their set of bacteria they will work on. Problem is finding one that works on a chicken when you don't know what bacteria they have.

Marek's is a possibility, it helps if you think of recent birds you've acquired or how it got into your flock. I would still do the treatment. I do treat with triple antibiotic ointment as well even if they are on antibiotic.

I've started her on tetracycline this afternoon. Also using colloidal silver on the eye.

Has the eye changed at all in color in the last day or so? The tetracycline may help if it is an infection. Gallimycin (erythromycin) is a good all round antibiotic which can treat both respiratory, intestinal, and staph/strep infections, but not a lot of feed stores carry it.

The eye is showing some small improvement. The milky/gray color is there but appears to be slowly dissipating. She has been on tetracycline for 2 days and is in much better spirits. She is "talking" and even forage with the other girls yesterday evening. Hopefully she is on the road to recovery. Thanks to everyone for their advice.
