Mean Mr Rooster...solved!

All I do is chase him into the coop and close the door. Once I get him in there, it's not hard at all. If he decides to give me a chase, at least it's not all over the yard. I can usually corner him in a few minutes. Once cornered, he submits. Once he submits, he's docile as a lamb. I'm sure over time, he will get the idea I'm not going to hurt him and he won't be so hard to catch. I'll just reach down and grab the top strap of the harness and pick him up.

All it takes is a little planning. If I'm expecting unfamiliars to be around, I can hook him up while he's on the roost at night....very easy when he's asleep. If ppl show up unexpectedly during the day, If I can get him into the coop, no further problem. The chase is on!

I have a RIR Rooster that came with the 5 hens all as 2 day old chicks. He was great until he got close to a year old, then he started attacking. I have found 2 solutions: 1. Mr Rooster recognizes me by the cloths (colors) I wear. He's used to seeing me in either shorts, or jeans. If I wear a sun dress...he attacks. So, wear cloths (colors) he recognizes. 2. I put a dog harness on him (upside down) and put him on a leash! He doesn't like it, but it sure does calm him down for a good while. And, if I'm having someone he's unfamiliar with come to see my set up, he can't reach them! Now I don't have to kill him!
you did good, very good

its very interesting what you did with your bad rooster....!!!! good going....!!! im just trying to understand what makes these bad roos act the way they do ..??? we have or i should say had a really crazy mean NHR rooster, that came with 3 hens, i separated him from my hens, when he first started to become mean around them & me when he was 6 months old, i thought about destroying him , for several days, but didn't think that was a good solution for the problem, i feel that I should be able to remedy the situation , with out killing ,so I looked for a better solution to the problem ., LIKE YOU DID...! and thats when I kicked him out of my 1/2 acre chicken yard area, he has been left out alone for about half a year now, & he sleeps on the fence near the coop, and during that time i would interact with him , only when i needed to, but never hurt him , and just pushed him away with my rake if i had to, maybe the aggression from these roosters are from feeling the hens will be taken over , or away from them, and they see us as another rooster who is taking the hens from them ,so making the roo feel he wont loose his hens might be a good idea..???? but wile trying to figureing my roo out I would give him treats and make a point to talked to him and tell him he was a good birdie when he was ...lol....plus i would go out in the dark and talk to him wile i was walking up to him as he was sleeping on the fence , then I would pet his back and talk to him, telling him he was a good birdie and all always using the same worlds & all when he cant see to bite....lol... he really seamed to like that interaction with the treats & the kinds words, so thank goodness for that maybe what i did helped, becasue i can now control him with my voice, when i tell him to go, he goes away, thank goodness ....lol....

hahahha right....lol.. but if he ever gets mean towards me again he will be penned up , but I really appreciate him being so protective in the night & he crows when some thing is going on in our yard, but during the day i always have my rake with me and tell him to go go go, and he does ...lol.. lucky hahahha right....lol.. but since i trained him, he has been good around me & I am always ready for a fight if he wants one...? but i keep him at bay at all times,& never turn my back on him & if he knows whats good for him , he will keep minding his own business & not turn bad again ...lol.. he is bad only towards ALL others strangers & alike ,but for me he is manageable so i leave him alone with his hens all day out free ranging he is happy around his hens, im glad we have him , Since he was just in a fight for his life yesterday , when out free ranging with his hens , some thing got him or he got what ever it was after his hens ..lol.. BUT he won the fight thank goodness , but lost all his long pretty tail feathers they were all over the ground when i got out there , so sadly for him he cant join the rooster contest right now, ....lol...... he is all messed up.....lol... lost feathers and all, i feel really safe when home alone with this giant bad boy rooster who is on the job 24/ 7....lol.. he is very good at protecting us...lol.. but if need be i will put him in a pen , so others can come over to visit ,

Here's Mr Rooster in all his glory with his dog harness on. You can only see the clips where I hook the leash, but it fits him just like it fits on the dogs, except you put it on upside down so the tie comes out the bottom. Birds don't like things above them, and it's too difficult for him to walk around with the clips on top. In any case, this works, and he has adjusted to wearing it all the time very well. He doesn't even realize it's on him.

Wow, he is a beautiful rooster.

That is the thing, roosters have been bred (or it has always been their nature) to protect the hens. The ones that are best at it are also likely to be aggressive when we deem it inappropriate.
Exactly yes..!!!! thats it

and figuring them out, then working with them to remedy the problem , then let them continue to do what nature intended them to do , i could not kill something just because i could not understand it at the time, so i just began observing and talking to this rooster to see if i could understand how he thinks, since i never had a mean rooster in my entire life out of all the flocks i had in several different states , so this mean rooster thing was not expected at all, but i was safe from his aggression as he was out in a large open area , and i would call him over to me then gave him a treat and talked to him every day to see if he could understand my words, he did seem to understand me and always he loved to hear me ask him if he wanted some chicken dinner ...lol.... after getting his chicken dinner, { just a bit of scratch } he would start clucking & making other noises roosters make when they are happy,
yippiechickie.gif
and i would tell him good boy Chicky boy many times as he ate...! its all just a kind of conditioning like you would train any animal ,so i knew i was getting some were with him, he was not stupid at all, just a bit crazy ....lol... and i wanted him to trust me and after our daily interactions , he was getting better & better and that aggression problem, slowly went away , like i was hoping it would , it didn't take up a lot of time , just a few minutes at night to toss him some scratch, wile I was seeking a way to remedy these kinds of aggression problems with roosters , since we all need them for several reasons, so i will do that with any young aggressive rooster to keep them from turning into crazy nut jobs....lol......so next I might get a chance to prove my method of this kind of taming roosters , maybe with the 2 Cockerels, i just ordered , so time will tell if i have to do it all over again with the new boys , since i just ordered one sliver laced wyandott Cockerel , i have seven of those hens already & also one Colombian wyandott, Cockerel I ordered with a few Colombian wyandott hens from my pet chicken due to arrive on june 2 so we will have 4 groups of pure bred chickens here, all kept separately NHR , SLW & CW, BR , so here is a pic our of mr. rooster Chicky boy & little miss bunny was out free ranging & she loves to eat Chicky boys dinner....lol..

It looks like you used a step-in harness. The kind that has a d-ring on each side of the clasp and normally buckles at the dog's withers. A regular Roman harness, or h-style wouldn't work on a chicken. I only mention it in case someone wants to do the same and is wondering what kind of harness.
