Hi I am new to BYC but not so new to chickens, I used to have 12 Rhode Island (I think that is what they are)

I have been offered by a friend 3 or 4 Silkie hens and one Silkie rooster and I have ordered this incubator http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e1205...m=271117749682&ssPageName=ADME:X:eRTM:AU:1123

I am from Australia and have three boys aged 9, 7 and 5 in September. I do have a few questions so will post them in relevant threads.

Welcome to the flock. Silkie hens are known as great brooders. Some people buy them intentionally just for that purpose., so they don't need an incubator. It doesn't mean all silkie hens go broody and make good mothers but, a majority of them do.

Some people swap out the silkie eggs, for fertile eggs of other breeds they would like to have. The silkie will hatch and raise them as her own.

You may not need an incubator unless you plan to raise a large number of chicks.

Thanks, I have already ordered an incubator. I am starting to think they may not be pure bred as the father of the chicks looks like this

You are correct. He is not a purebred Silkie as is easily seen in his red comb and wattles. Pure Silkies have dark, mulberry colored combs and wattles. He is a Silkie mixed breed.
