Hi there! So excited to have found this site full of info on chickens. . We live in Springfield Oregon. We just got our pullets about 1 1/2 weeks ago. We have two ameraucanas and two speckled sussexes. The ameraucanas I think are about 11/12 weeks old and the speckled sussexes are about 7 weeks old. We just have a little chicken tractor that was given to us. I've quickly discovered this is not out ideal set up and my DH is working on planning and building the right coop/run for us. We also have two daughters ages 9 and soon to be 2. And two dogs a greyhound lab mix Annie whose 7 and a freakishly giant (20lbs) chihuahua Tucker whose 6. Looking forward to learning all I need to know about raising happy healthy chickens.

I do believe you came to the correct sight if you have questions you just need to ask .....

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Speckled Sussex are a friendly, gentle breed and the Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's favorite chickens. She loves the colored eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

The most important thing is to keep your dogs away from your chickens PERIOD. People generally come to this thread to lament their dogs/cats have massacred their flock. Please don't let that happen to your birds.

Chicks are squeaky toys to dogs, even if they don't mean to hurt them - the chicks die anyway. They don't have any defenses but YOU. No one has ever heard of chicks/chickens killing a dog.

Chihuahuas and doxies are frequent chicken predators, and yours is a jumbo on steroids or something. Greyhounds were bred to chase the lure (rabbits, real or fake).

If your dogs end up loving and protecting your birds, I will apologize profoundly to you and them. Just hoping to save you from the heartache.
