The title says it all! I want to use the poop for fertilizer but I don't have the slightest idea how to go about this. Is there something else that needs to be done? How can I store it? Any help would be appreciated!!!

I have a big "pooper scooper" meant for doggy doo but it works for my chickens as well. it has a scoop and spade/rake part and they come in all sizes at any pet supply store. Ace and maybe other hardware store like that carry galvanized buckets with lids that lock down. that should keep any unwanted critters out in storage.

I just let the poo stay in the shavings until i clean the coop. Throw more shavings on top of what's there if they scratch too much out onto the ground, or if it looks like more shavings are needed. Very little odor. If there's poo sitting on top of the shavings, I'll toss a cup full of scratch in, and they'll get things well stirred up. If you're wanting to "harvest" the poo, and leave the shavings behind, I'd recommend that you use a poop board under the roost(s) perhaps with some PDZ. Then all the poo would be in one place, easy to scoop with your litter scooper, and the shavings underneath will stay very clean for a longer time.

Both great Ideas! This BYC place is great! Every questions i've asked so far has led to a fast easy result. I'll take the ideas everyone has and customize them for myself!

I lay a thin layer of straw under the roost, every two days I lay down another light layer then at the end of the week I rake it out and start over...Place it in an unused area of the garden for now, will spread it out after the fall harvest :) Once our garden is done for the year everything goes spread out on the garden, rabbit droppings are the best...we started raising them last year and this year is our best crop of corn ever! The stalks are at least 8-9 feet high!
