I have a five month old New Hampshire Red who is currently in a nesting box and panting and seems to want to lay. My two other pullets started to recently lay and I got two good eggs from them today. However, I also got a soft shelled egg earlier that was broken. I don't know who laid that one. Could it have been the New Hampshire? If so, why is she still in the nesting box?

She's been in there for about two hours now and I felt her abdomen and it felt normal. I worried about her but I don't know what could be wrong. I do not have access to a vet.

It's possible it's from her. What's the temperature in the coop?

Some of my hens sit a while after laying, others lay and run. Give her a few minutes and if she's still there gently take her out and set her next to the water.

It's pretty hot out today, about 90 degrees. She has jumped out of the nesting box a couple times and seems to walk normally, but then goes back in again. She's digging around in the nesting material a lot

If the soft egg was her's, it would be her first egg.

I would bet that's what the panting is from. A lot of mine pant anytime it's over 80 here. Try taking her out and distracting her for a minute with a cool treat. I'd hate to interrupt if she was trying to lay, but at the same time I'd hate more to have her overheat.
