I need some help in designing and laying out my roosting poles. For example how far away from the wall do they need to be? How far apart? How tall? I am enclosing a picture of how it is laid out so far...but I am not 100% happy with this? The dropping board with the PDZ is working great I just think the top rail is too close to the window? It's only about 8" away form the wall? Currently I have 7 hens and 1 rooster in here but 4 are chicks and not really roosting yet. The door opens in so I can only go out so far? The coop is 4 x 6

8in from wall is not so bad but 10 would be more accommodating. The two roosts are almost on top of each other, the birds on the top roost might bomb the birds below.
How much headroom do you have under the poop deck? Is it intended for space for the birds?

So if I move the top one out 2" and then move the bottom one out too? I put the poop deck up slightly so they wouldn't get the hay in it? They can not go under it, but my bedding does get under it and I do have to rake that out from time to time? I could possibly add a bigger lip and then put the poop deck on the floor? Right now they don't even use the lower pole...Not sure if they will once the babies get bigger?

It is their natural tendency to roost at the highest spot. If your roost is 4ft each (my guess), the top will hold only so many (3 to 5 maybe) then the rest will be relegated to the lower roost.

In my case, there are 3 3-ft roosts. The poop deck is at 20-in above floor giving room for birds to roam. That is where water and feeder are so they do not stand on top and poop into the water. The lower roost is at 24-in and other two at 36-in. The roosts are about 16-in apart.

If that was my coop, I would tear out what you have, and build 2 new roosts, 2X4"s, wide side up, across the back end, over the popdoor, spanning the four foot of the coop. Eight inches is too close to the wall, their tail feathers will rub, not to mention, they, depending on how they are facing, will dump all over the wall. Also, I would not want to be one of the birds forced to use one of that bottom roost, it could be a crappy nights sleep. My roosts (3) are spaced 18", on centers, 30" high, and 18" from the wall, on the same level, easily removable for cleaning time. Roosts being further apart helps prevent a bully from picking on a bird, the next roost over. From what it looks like, you could fit two roosts in your coop, following those measurements.
