Just lost one of my girls!

I think I might know now what hqppened. I found Deadly Nightshade growing near their fenced run! It was hiding in among my tomato plants.

I bet my lovely chicken ate some of it. That could explain the sudden death.

Be aware of poisonous weeds.
I havent researched that plant and dont know what it even looks like. Glad you found out and can protect the others.

I've got nightshade all over the place here; no chickens have died over it, though. I do necropsies on every bird here, so I'm sure. The wild birds eat it, that's how it spreads everywhere (southern Michigan). Chickens die for many reasons, and without a PM you'll never know what happened to her. So sorry for your loss. Mary

I just found this thread and it reminded me of my favorite bird that we lost this summer. We have a pond and she alone of the 25 we have out free ranging, got in and drowned. I believe there is some weird Cosmic Law that is in effect, only the birds we treasure the most, can and will find a way to do themselves in. It has been a couple of months now… but I still feel the loss of our personable Pearl. She was a help in the flower beds and a pest in the garden, but we loved her. Something about the birds that are not so afraid of everything, they seem to be the ones that explore and or try new things, and it ends up being their undoing.

Sorry for the unexpected loss of your hen,

RJ
