We had a very scary thunder storm. One chicken was dead on the coop floor in the morning. The rest looked scruffy for a few days and have stopped laying. I thought they were going into an early molt, but now look ok but still seem subdued. Been 3weeks and still not laying. Any thoughts? Oh, not eating or drinking as much as before also. They are austrolorps and 16 months old.

So sorry for your loss! It could be a combination of things...that bad storm one of them. Have you been having real hot temps lately? That, in conjunction with the storm, might possibly be it. I, too, have Black Australorps...the loves of my life! I know the miserable heat here in the Pacific Northwest has affected my girls' daily attitudes/routines, too. I've been placing a sprinkler on low where the water hits just inside their run area...they love it! They literally stand in the wet spots cooling off their feet! I also give them a few frozen ice water muffins that have a chunk of fresh corn on the cob in them. They're so easy to make and I freeze them ahead of time in baggies to take out to them.

No, the temps have been about 80 right along. Pretty mild really. The storm was very bad though, as in I want to crawl under my bed and hide bad. I usually sleep right through them with a window open right over my head, and this was the first time I have ever actually been scared. As long as they aren't laying I figured I would worm them, and get that over with. Just started that today.
