Best goose breed?

Hi. I've always been very interested in geese... But don't really know much about them. I've never raised anything but pheasants.
What is the best goose breed to own? Like, the friendliest I guess. I've heard that geese can bond to their people pretty well and after having ring neck pheasants who hated me, I kind of like the idea of having a bird that doesn't run away from me. Is there a particular breed that is friendlier and less flighty?
Anyway, that and any other goose advice would be much appreciated. :)

I raise Sebastopol's and they are a gentle bred. If you raise the with you in the house for about a week and handle them they know you as momma. Then put them out in the garage with a heat lamp in and big container this way you still work with them and handle them. I take it in steps to finally move them into a predator proof pen at night. Mine free range in the day time. I let them out at about 10:00 am so the night time predators do not get them! Goslings need lots of grass, dandelion leafs, romaine lettuce and many more greens, kale, beet greens, turnip greens, watermelon, apple, grapes. When goslings you have to chop it all up for them but the diet does include water fowl growth or gamebird growth feed. But we encourage more greens and that besides the feed. This keeps you goslings no matter which breed to not get TWT or Angel wing. You only feed growth crumbles to goslings for 3 weeks and then change over to adult maintenance feed slowly going into week 3. I also mix human oatmeal with their growth pellets so they do not get too much protein...

You only need a children's pool for them to play and clean in that is emptied daily to keep it clean and healthy for geese. Baby goslings do not need to be in a pool right away. If you do put them in water make sure to blow dry them so they do not get chilled.

Others will join in on their breed of geese they have so you can get an idea of what geese you would like to have. But it is what you like the looks of on the geese.

I, too, love sebastopols, they are so puffy and unique, mine died 2 days after got it as a gosling, sexed as a gander. In that two days, we cuddled him up in a blanket and he followed me around. I loved him so much already, but we should have thought about the condition they were in for the last two days. We were at a flea market. The guy may be back there next month with the remaining goslings he had, and we may try once again.
 
I have to agree. I LOVE my sebastopols, but I have also had American geese, and they are nice as well but larger. I think any of them are your best friends with some lettuce or carrots. They do love their treats.
 
PoultryQueen, I'm so sorry someone sold you a sick gosling. But you should never have just one goose. They are social animals and need another of their own species to truly be happy and normal. I can't think of any breeders in Ohio. But gosling season is really over till next spring. Good luck!
 
I love my geese, they´re so sweet and non-aggressive. I have Pilgrim-type geese, and none of them have ever challenged me beyond a hiss, even when I mess about with their

goslings. Here are some of mine from last year, except for the two bigger goslings, they were adoptees, not Pils.
 
Funny how this topic reappears every few months and the responses are pretty much the same as usual. I think it has more to do with individual goose temperament and how raised than it does a specific breed. With that said, my favorite breeds are dewlap Toulouse, Africans, and production Toulouse. My least favorite are embdens (sorry Patti).

Yeah, I agree with you about the way the topic pops up, also how they´re raised, but I think there seems to be a generality about the breeds, although individuals can vary, of course....a bit like dogs, horses, cattle, blah blah...characteristics of the breeds.....
Of course, we all think the breeds we have are the best, that´s why we have them... and what a variety!
