Very Aggressive Female Turkey

Hi!

I have two bourbon red females that are two and a half. One has been aggressive ever since summer started. It seems as if though she only gets mean in the summer and winter seasons. Every time i come out and greet her she puffs up and pecks at my heels and she chases me about 20 feet then stops and carries on being mad. Is it her hormones acting up or is it something else?

Do you have a tom? I can't speak to turkeys but I know that when I lost my drake, one of my ducks (who was very sweet!) decided that in the absence of a male, someone needed to be protective and overshot the mark.

It doesn't always happen, but does sometimes. Just a guess.
 
I might suggest getting a friendly tom. A good tom will keep your hens in line (at least in my experience). My first tom would allow the hens to quarrel, but would break up any fights that started to get too mean, protect the cats, protect all of the babies and just, in general, be very good at watching over everyone. I have an aggressive hen (more towards other animals) and when I have a good tom around, she is very well behaved. When there is no tom around, she goes bezerk and will attack other animals (like the babies, cats, ducks, chickens and other hens)/

Ha! So it's not just my female birds that overcompensate!

I'm not going to say that everyone should have a flock of any bird species and have a male. Clearly all-male and all-female flocks do just fine. Until you get one of THOSE females. I agree with PalmRoyal. Get a mild tom. Even if you don't want to breed them, if he mates you pick up the eggs, no problem. But make sure it's a mild tom. You don't want to introduce a bigger problem than the one you have. But it seems like I'm not alone in finding that females will go all Terminator in the absence of a male.
 
I have five BR turkeys. 3 hens, and two toms. The dominant tom is super calm. One hen and the younger tom pick on the rooster. Once they really get going, the others join in. I'm definitely sending those two to freezer camp soon, to see how the rest do. If I free range the turkeys by themselves, they run off to the neighbors, if they range with the chickens, my rooster gets picked on.
