Thanks for the info, I kind of wondered about them "knowing".  I have been researching like crazy and have thought they were all boys for the past couple of weeks.  I figure if a newbie like me can give a good guess from looking at the internet, then so can anyone else.  I did contact them a little bit ago by email, so we'll see what they say.  I would hate if it were true, they seemed really nice.

I'm in Raeford and this was my first go at raising chicks.  So it was a good learning experience, at least I know what roo's look like now.wink.png

I agree, everyone here has been awesome!

I had almost the same thing happen to me when I first started with chickens.  I went to buy 6 barred rock chicks from a small family farm.  They were advertised as straight run.  They had a couple of hundred in a big tub like the ones that Tractor Supply uses for their chicks.  They all had light dots on their heads.  I did not know that the dot indicated males.  All went in the freezer when they were grown.  My guess is that they ordered roos because they were cheaper and sold as straight run.  One of my early chicken lessons learned.  th.gifsmile.png

Good Morning everyone!!

We have lots planned for this weekend...attempting to finish the cosmetic work on the coop (we have yet to put up the white "barn" trim), digging a "pit" to place the duck pond in (DH even wants to build a pump so we can pump the dirty water out and pour clean water in without having to pull the pond up).  I have watermelon that is already 8" tall and that is going to go into the ground this weekend along with some tomato seedlings!!  I get to cut the grass again and lug water out to our orchard (hey did I mention my "sticks" are blooming?!?  Well, my peaches, nectarines, and pears are...haven't seen anything from the apples, cherries or the figs...yet).  Then we get to do all of the inside stuff: we're replacing ceiling fans (adding one to DD's room...and ours IF I can talk DH into it...hehe) and doing some light electrical work as well as finishing up my sewing/craft room.  As you can see, 98% of what we're doing has nothing to do with chickens...although you all would be SO proud of my DH....he suggested we start researching incubators and brooders as it would be a good Science lesson for our children when they get older!!  celebrate.gif  Good thing we still have a while for that though, because I do NOT want to deal with babies all over the place until mine are old enough to at least not squeeze them to death!!  I am OVERRUN with eggs!!  My chickens are laying 6-7 eggs a day and I have over 5 dozen in my fridge.  So my question...if I was to keep them on the counter, what is the typical care/routine for them?  I understand they can sit at "room" temperature for up to 5 weeks, is that right??  Anyone want some Orpington/Cochin/Maran Mixed eggs?!?  I'll start saving some for you!  LOL

I am hoping because we have a LOT planned this weekend that MY incubator will finish and that #2 will arrive!!  fl.gif  I am so anxious to get this OVER WITH!!  I will confess, the weather/humidity has encouraged the desire to be rid of it all!!  LOL.  I go today for another weekly checkup, so here's for something fl.gif happening!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to anyone I might have missed!!  I hope you had a wonderfully special day and it was filled with lots of love and laughter!!  hugs.gif Hope everyone has a great day!!  It's FRIDAY!!!!  wee.gif

A good morning to you all! Have just been browsing this week, so a warm welcome to all new folk......

News update: the Partridge Silkie chicks that were in the brooder are now all outside, all doing well.........

The chicks indoors - 2 weeks old today are growing fast, feathers coming through. The Barnevelder chicks are really beautiful in coloring, a nice chocolate brown chipmunk at first with some wonderful feather markings coming through. I am just curious as to why not many others keep these beautiful birds.

These are goreous chicks!  Showgirls haven't been my fav, but this little chick is so cute she almost wins me over!  Look at that fluff on her head!  And in the other pile of fuzzies...I see whites, a black (is his penguine tummy hidden or doesn't he have one?) and two partridge.  Is that right?  I'm still learning what silkie colors look like as chicks--I've seen a lot more adults and dialing it backwards isn't always easy! lau.gif

Congrats on a great hatch!!!  And have a great weekend, those of you getting a jump start!  My tomatoes and peppers are in, but now I'm having watermelon envy and I haven't even prepped that bed yet!
