I'm sorry about the attack on the chickens.  I'll hope it's not the dog, but if it is, I hope you get it taken care of.

We got the sheepshed cleaned up and ready to turn into a double henhouse.  Just need to get the lumber.  Fencing and windows are at hand.  Hubby went with me to pick up 14 more BCM chicks today (It's CoopScoop's fault!) and I think he's caught the chicken bug now.  He was pointing out to me that we have another rarely used sheepshed, a smaller one in another pasture section that could give us another isolated breeding population with a little work, without interfereing with our pattern of pasture rotation on the locker lambs.  It was after he saw the adult Marans the guy had.  He was drooling over the hackle on the guy's huge roo.  He also had some nice Brahmas, which Hubby liked, and some TopHats, which I like to look at but don't want to own.  One building conversion at a time, I think.  I don't want to overstep myself.  (This is me being cautious.gig.gif)

Somehow I'm now up to 105 chickens.  How'd that happen?

Meg and Chris, plus mastiffs Murphy, Jake and Reilly, and Great Dane Levi. Orpingtons, Welsummers, Ameraucanas, Barnevelders, Rosecomb Brown Leghorns, Cuckoo Marans, and a few turkeys, along with NZW rabbits, summer lambs or calves, and who knows what else.

The cochins were in a hutch (kinda like the kind HT builds) in the barn.
Thank you all!

Wildriver~ sorry about your loss. hugs.gif

We got out first double yolker egg today! :celebrate One of our EEs layed a huge egg! Since it wouldn't fit in my cartons I just had to open it up! It was pretty cool to see 2 yolk from it! Guess if I see one of the EEs walking a little strattle legged I'll know which one layed that huge egg!

I'm still looking for the right incubator at the right price. DH is prepared to get the Little Giant and turner from TSC while they are on sale but I am still hunting on ebay to see if I can find a good deal on one that also has the fan kit in it. I discovered the other day that our eggs are fertile so I will be trying some of those in the new incubator when we get it along with buying some mixed breed eggs from our chick guy.

what does the neighbor say? is he sorry about it or doesn't give a rats *** about what happens?

I've just started to have problems with this guy! His mother is super sweet but elderly and he has moved in with her, I used to bring her eggs now the guy won't let me he.gifsomad.gif the 1st time his dog killed my barn cat, I caught the dog in a cage & brought it back and the lady offered to pay. The second time I lost both my BLRW wyandotte boys, and the guy cussed me out. The 3rd I caught the dog in a cage and kept it for well over a week, hoping to scare the guy into chaining it up, it worked for about a month. Now I've got a gun and a live trap, if I catch it its going to the shelter 2 counties over!

It's the only thing you can do besides shooting it. If it's not aggressive to you I'd deff take it to the shelter.

Meredith, I'm so sorry! I hate to say this, but I have been through the same issues with dogs. It is heartbreaking to have your precious chickens killed, and what's worse, it's because of a terrible neighbor's carelessness. Just 2 nights ago, a dog came through my fence and attacked my free range chickens, but luckily I heard the noise and scared the dog off. We have had so many dog attacks over the last 6 years, and at this point, it completely infuriates me. I understand the risks of free range, but when will people take responsibility for their dogs? Never! Never in the 6 years I've lived here.

Which reminds me, I have to go set some traps!

Incubators, please don't do the LG..... Spend the extra, get the GQF Genesis HovaBator 1588, it has a digital pre-set thermostat, add the turner for it and you have a great starter incubator. I do not add water until Day 18, preferring the dry incubation method, and find it works well.....

Meredith,

what do the local law enforcement or animal control say? I would trap the dog, call them and get them to take it away and then he will have to deal with them direct and pay the fines.

I'm actually trying to get DH to agree to a Hovabator. They run the same price as the LG but I've heard they are better. We are just planning to use it a few times a year. We are figuring we may hatch a few chicks to add to our flock and try to sell a few too. The Genesis is nice but not in our price range. We are trying to spend less than $100 for an incubator.

Does anyone know how to put a computer fan into a still air incubator to make it a forced air incubator? I was reading on some of the other thread on BYC and people were mentioning adding computer fans to their still air incubators to make them better. DH could do this and has computer fans around that could be used.
