On a brighter note, my little chocolate is still with us this morning. She is handling feedings well and it appears to be passing her crop. WOW is she a little fighter !!!!     she just hangs tight and lets the food and electrolytes take hold of her system. She has a long road to recovery but still being here after what she went thru yesterday sure does give me some hope. Speaking of hope, that is what I have named her "Hope".

I'm looking for new sources for my locker lambs this spring.  I'm only getting half from my normal source. It's going to be a bad year for parasites; in fact, it's already started.  I'd like to spread my sources this year.  If you know anyone with wool breed wether weanlings, please let me know.  I am not hunting for hair sheep, as I use the wool, too. 

I TOLD hubby we should have done calves this year!  It would have cut down the parasite issues immensely, as cattle have never been run on this farm.  It was horses before we bought it, and we've had dairy goats and sheep as long as we've had the property.  Ah well, calves next year.

The lack of winter is going to make for a heyday summer for mosquitoes, flies, ticks, fleas, fire ants and internal parasites.  It's going to be a fun ride!  I wish I could figure out how to attract another hornet's nest.  They do such a good job on flies.  We had one in the maple at the barn a few years back and it was a nearly fly-free summer.  Haven't gotten one since.  Maybe we'll get lucky this year.  (I know, I know, most people don't want them, but I encourage hornets and wasps everywhere except doorways.  They help.   But I don't have little kids either, which makes a difference!)

Ya know... I have been having a terrible time with mites. I just dusted last weekend, that was the second dose. Wonder if THAT had anything to do with the dead hen, did I kill her with seven dust????  OR  do they have worms again!!   Guess I could worm them again.  I may need to do it 3 times a year since I have so many.   IDK...    Not looking forward to fleas either. We had NONE last year...it was wonderful !!

What do you find to be the most effective wormer?  And what's the withdrawal time for meat and eggs?  The only thing I've found labeled is Piperazine.  Thankfully I haven't had a mite issue, but I definitely need to worm.

How often do you worm chickens? When (age) do you worm them and with what?

I use Valbazan ..worm, then reworm 10 days later. 24 days off eggs to eat, you can hatch them. I don't hatch them until it is closer to the end of the 24 days...that is what "I" do.  I am not sure of the withdrawal for eating.

I usually worm 2 times a year ..the beginning of summer and then in the winter. I think I will do a spring worming , then worm mid to late summer instead of the beginning of summer., then again in the winter. I start worming my chickens at about 4-5 months old.

I use safeguard for the younger birds. I put it right in their water.

Saw a HUGE great Pyrenees puppy in my yard today pacing around our coop.  THANKFULLY the chickens were NOT out yet this morning.  Scared it off, but DH and I are off to go buy a gun in case it comes back.  The puppy was really cute looking and belonged to someone (had tags...so at least it USE to belong to someone) so if I see it again, I will shoot to scare it off...unless it's attacking or what not.  I am wondering if I am seeing an increase in dogs/cats because of the economy that people are just turning them loose or what?!?  Last year we had NOTHING out here but deer.

BHep -  So sorry for the loss of 2 of yours!!  Looks like you have a room full of babies to keep you plenty busy!!

Heading to the store to WALK and WALK and WALK...oh yeah and buy a gun!!    Have a wonderful Easter Weekend if I don't "see" anyone on in the next few days.  We're hoping and praying for an Easter baby...starting to feel it a bit...so we'll see!!  I'm tempted to buy the ingredients for the Amish Midwife Induction recipe (castrol oil, almonds and sherbert!!) but I don't know if I am desperate enough yet!!  LOL.  I will OFFICIALLY be overdue on Tuesday, so we will see what the outcome is if nothing has happened by then!!
