I did something very similar for a big outdoor grow out last year when it was still quite cold in March with 20+ babies

Thank you for that suggestion! Definately sounds like a good idea. The only issue we have with the brooder (besides the shavings escaping issue) is we didn't make the door on top very big and it becomes a problem when it comes time to change the bedding. It also makes it fun to try to catch chicks when they want to run to the corners! I may have to see if DH will cut a couple extra doors or make the current door bigger.

Good Morning Everyone!!

Today is another doctor day for me.  Heading out to see what they say and decide how desperate I am going to be if I am really REALLY considering drinking a castor oil concoction I have read about!!  I am also reading about evening primrose oil, red raspberry leaf tea, black cohosh and a few other herbal supplements, but some I am leery on.  We'll see what the verdict is.  Maybe picking up 75# of chicken feed, oyster shells and some tomato plants (since all my starters died for some reason) will do the trick.  Either way, I find out when the doctors will plan on inducing now that I am OVERDUE!!  Sorry I am so impatient, but I would like to hatch before my broody!!  LOL lau.gif

Spent most of yesterday planting peppers and a few other things in the garden...that position didn't work to do anything but give me a back ache!!  LOL

I'm a SAHM happily married to the man of my dreams with two DD (another due 7/2013), 1 cat, 3 Marans, 1 BSL rooster (NoName), 1 Misc. Rooster (Tyrone); 5 Ducks (Cadbury and his girls), 2 misc. young chicks, 12 pullets, etc.

Just for fun, I will tell you that with my first one, they let me go three weeks over my due date.  22 days actually, and when they induced she still took her sweet time and 36 hours.  (She's still never on time!)  They kept saying they must have miscalculated my date.  I told them it wasn't possible, since my military husband had only been home four days.  They ignored me.

Now that I got your eyes popping, I will add that that was nearly thirty years ago, and they don't do that to people any more.  No worries.  You'll get that hatchling soon!

Our babies (20 )were in a large tote container for the first week. It seemed much less dusty than when we  had only 4 in a wire kennel in the house! Now that it is warm, they are outside in our screnned porch with their heat lamp. I will never have chicks in the house again!!! Cute, but wayyyyy too messy!!

I have a great husband, a mini farm that we call Barred Rock Farm! 1 Golden Retriever, 10 assorted cats, 3 goats, Jersey Giants, Cochins, Columbian Wyandottes , RIRs, Sex Links, Buff Orphingtons, Barred Rocks , EE, all of which is subject to change at any time!!  Except the great husband part!!!

I have 20 in a large gerbil cage brooding in my closet. Its the hall closet with the hot water heater so no heat lamp is needed. I used straw and hay and it seems to be doing great. I try to change it BEFORE it gets stinky though.

Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get some SMALL wire around the bottom part of one of my pens and kick these monsters outside with a lamp. The Blue Sex Links are HUGE babies that eat a lot but aren't feathering in very fast.....

I modified the brooder this morning with cardboard and zipties. Placed a strip of cardboard across the front to hopefully help the shavings throwing issue. Then changed the bedding out. I'm not seeing any more mess right now. ya.gif Hopefully the modification helps. fl.gif And out of our chicks I am sure of one rooster. One of the 2 white EEs is a definate boy. I'm so unfamiliar with single comb chickens development that I have no clue with the cochins, leghorns, turken, or my frizzle. No clue on my polish either or my mystery chick that I think is an EE/polish cross. Guess I keep waiting on them.
