Some interesting colors in this last batch of mixed Orp eggs.  I'm looking forward to seeing what a couple of them become.  I passed them on to the next two broody hens, and danged if they aren't sharing all of the babies peacefully.  hu.gif Usually if I have more than one broody at a time getting chicks, they guard them jealously, but these two are sharing.  One is an older buff Orp, and the second is a black split about a year old.  The babies are content to have multiple moms.  They'll run to me too, if I scratch the ground.  Silly birdies.

Meg and Chris, plus mastiffs Murphy, Jake and Reilly, and Great Dane Levi. Orpingtons, Welsummers, Ameraucanas, Barnevelders, Rosecomb Brown Leghorns, Cuckoo Marans, and a few turkeys, along with NZW rabbits, summer lambs or calves, and who knows what else.

Chicken question: When is a good time (what age) to introduce momma and baby back into the flock??  Is there anything I should be concerned about or on the look out for?!?

Thanks everyone.  Have a great day!!

Let her back in now... Olivia will protect the baby....the others will be curious but should mind their manners.  smile.png

Too bad you aren't closer. I have some 2 month old partridge chicks I'm about to thin down, have a pretty solid idea on boys/girls already by color, from nice breeder lines. But I'm smack in the middle of the North part of state (person County) The only other people I know who breed/show bearded partridge are well west of me.

When I went this morning to put a late-hatched chick in with the others (because hens can't count), the buff and black fluffy moms were side-by-side with all the babies running around them. I was wishing I had my camera with me.  Or a video camera!  When I get home from work, I'll see if I can get some pics.

Tomorrow is my last official day at work until August!  WooHoo!!!!!!!  wee.gifcelebrate.gifyesss.gifyippiechickie.gif

(It doesn't mean I won't be working...just that I can work where, when and how I want to.  No schedule, no deadlines, other than my own making.)

CONGRATS Wild!!  ya.gif  So happy for you.  We expect photos of your incubator when it arrives!!  big_smile.png

Beth - I have tried talking DH into a pool, but sadly he says we don't have enough room for one because the back acreage is reserved for chickens, ducks and sheep while the front wooded lot is for the Ram and then there's the garden and orchard.  The only available spot would be by the side of the house, but that is where the garage is suppose to be built, so he refuses to let me have my way!!  LOL.  Looks like we will just have to party in the bathtub as our make-believe pool!!  lau.gif  OOHH, and if I put momma and baby outside with the rest, will she remember to put him/her back into the coop at night?!?

Thanks again for all the help!!  Next time I won't be so lost (hopefully) when it comes to little ones!!

I'm a SAHM happily married to the man of my dreams with two DD (another due 7/2013), 1 cat, 3 Marans, 1 Misc. Rooster (Tyrone); 4 Ducks (Cadbury and his girls), 8 assorted pullets, 5 babies and MORE chicken math to come.

She won't let the baby stray too far from her, and most likely it will stay close to her, anyway.  My broodies always made a nest on the floor to sleep with the chicks until the babies were big enough to get up to a higher space with her (normally the nest boxes, in my case... barnie.gif ) and they stay together until the chicks are old enough and she "kicks them out of the nest" (or does this: smack.gif lol) .  She will be fine.  big_smile.png
