We started with 9 laying hens and purchased 74 chicks. After starting the babies in the house (we only lost 4), they were moved to our large chicken house. We were on a GREAT path. Recently, I was SURE that we were losing some (it's ridiculously difficult to count 80 birds). After I noticed that one of my favorites was for sure gone, I sat in the coop and counted. Then counted again. I came up with 69 each time. I have a feeling that my beloved Pyrenees/Anatolian is the culprit. He was hired to be their protector, but he has killed in the past. We never see anything, and never find ANY evidence of their demise. Just POOF, gone. I really hate to get rid of the dog, but I LOVE these birds and we have invested a great deal of money in them. People talk about hanging the corpse of the bird from the dog, but there's never one to hang. I should add that we can't keep him inside while we are away. Any suggestions??
