URGENT: gangrene? *GRAPHIC*

Are you withholding her chicken food for a few hours before/after medicating? Tetracycline doesn't like calcium, dairy products and a few other things that escape me at the moment.

I'm not sure if tetracycline is gonna be strong enough in this scenario. If this doesn't work, I really recommend going to a vet. Even if they don't know ducks they can at least prescribe a stronger antibiotic like sulfonamide.

DUCKS ??? I thought we were discussing a chicken...

The OP said earlier that Duramycin was all they had along with triple antibiotic ointment, and that the vet wasn't a possibility. Duramycin works best when a small amount of citric acid is added to it. Ball citric acid is available in grocery and hardware store that sell canning supplies.

The skin has, for the most part, turned pink again with a slightly greenish tint. I'm glad to see she's getting better. The wound itself has a thick, ugly black scab over it, but it's looking good. She slept in the empty rabbit hutch last night and was pacing behind the door this morning, so I let her out for the day. I think I'd like to keep her caged mostly, though, so she can heal without anything tearing her open again.

No, I haven't. Life has been rather hectic in the last couple of days and she hasn't had the medicated water, but I didn't know about those foods. Mostly we'd been giving her pieces of bread soaked in the Duramycin water, which she liked.
Is it necessary to give her probiotics, or will she be okay without them (I hope)?

Okay, thanks. I'll see if someone can get some on the next shopping trip. About how much should I use?

The dosage for the citric acid is something I can't find. A pinch will probably do. I have asked a couple of BYC friends for dosages and answers are pending.

To increase solubility of oxytetracycline or tetracycline products for water medication:
- Use 5 parts of CITRIC ACID powder added to 1 part oxytetracycline or tetracycline powder to be dissolved.
- e.g. 500 g of CITRIC ACID for each 100 g of tetracycline hydrochloride to be dissolved in the drinking water.

Okay, thanks. Will see about the citric acid.

She's doing really well. So far we're keeping her away from the other chickens so her scab can heal up without getting scratched, but otherwise she's back to normal. The medicated water isn't always available to her but I'm trying to give some to her every day.
