I know that for humans, we have to grind up flax seed to get any nutritional value from it, but do I have to do that for the chickens too?
wouldn't they just be able to grind it up in their crop?

Linseed (flax seed) is ok for chickens when I did feed it I soaked it over night because of the harder to digest fiber.

It can if you use to much, if I remember right it's only like 3% of their total diet.
That would be like 3 lbs flax to 97 lbs feed, there was also studies done that showed hens fed a high amount of Linseed (flax) over a long period of time have over all smaller eggs with less yolk, chicken had liver hemorrhages, and loss of body weight.

yikes. fishy eggs....ick. maybe I should just forego the flax seed then? I don't have much. maybe a cup. I was just going to give it to the girls (I have 9) instead of throwing it out.

that wouldn't be too much- I hear it makes them fishy if you feed it to them a lot. Also heard that feeding cottonseed makes the yolks green (gross)

No it's not. the problem is, high amounts of flax can cause a drop in egg production and health problems in the birds.
