day 27 of a duck egg, started to hatch but stopped!!!

HI. I had two duck eggs in a homemade incubator, first one died about a week old, the other one had survived til now.
today is the day 27 I noticed a crack in the shell. for about an hour it tried to break afew pieces of the hard shell, but couldn't penetrate the soft skin under the shell for almost 5 hours now. and has stopped moving and tapping the soft skin :(

it it dead or what?

I post some pictures of the hole it has made, and one of them under candlelight. I couldnt realize anything from them!

they start and then rest. the first pip does not mean they are ready to hatch just means they wanted air and are digesting their yolk for up to 24 hrs after pip. be patient.
 
Don't worry about that, I have hatched lots of duck and chicken eggs and they take breaks. It can take up to 24-36 hours for them to be fully hatched. All of those pictures looked like normal pips...like the other users said above...be patient

Well, they tend to rest for awhile after making their initial pip (up to 12 hours or so) before they start rotating and "unzipping" the egg. So 5 hours would normally not worry me at all. That said, it doesn't look like it pipped in the best place. It should have pipped in the air cell, but it appears to have pipped a bit low so that might not be a good sign. They can sometimes drown if they pip anywhere other than in the air cell. Could just be the lighting as well, but the membrane looks dry to me (dark brownish instead of white), which would indicate it has dried out and will be harder for the duckling to hatch out. Are you keeping the humidity up really high? Ducks need pretty much as high humidity as you can get to hatch out successfully once they have pipped.

If you gently tap on the egg with a fingernail and peep at it, does it make any sound at all? Answer you with a peep, or any movement? I would check for that and if you see any response at all, put it back in the incubator and leave it be for awhile. It's always hard to know what the best thing to do is, but if you open up the incubator after they have pipped you can dry out those membranes and the duckling won't be able to break through the membrane themselves. Sometimes they need a little assistance, but it's always best to let them do it themselves since helping them hatch out too early/fast will kill them.

Such a tough situation, but give us an update when you can! Good luck!!

yes, it's a bit lower than the air cell, at least that's what I can see from outside :\
yes I think it's skin dried out a little more after testing the egg. I don't know the digital mosture, but tries to put more wet sponges and spray some water around the box for more moisture, that's all I can do I think with my primitive staff :|
Also taped and scratched it a bit with fingernail, it didn't peep, but I could hear some tik taaking sounds coming from inside by listening closely. :) so I think he/she is still 100% alive at least. I hope remains that way

Ok, well that's a great sign then! I wouldn't worry too much more, just give it a little more time to finish. :)
 
hello guys. 36 hours has pased since the last pictures posted, it's beak has managed to come out of the shell, and is constantly peeping. I think he is stucked.
I saw some videos on youtube, duck eggs hatching, they were penetrating on the top of the egg, not the middle, and all of them were able to come out in afew ours from the cracks. so should I help him coming out or what?
please replay.
