Someone at work has said they will go in with me to order chicks. She wants both meaties and layers, so I'm guessing that if we have to have a minimum of 25, they might let us mix them up? Also, does anyone know if we can get turkey poults in the same mailing? Or does it need to be separate?
I have not ordered any chicks from hatcheries.....yet, and we raise dual purpose birds for the most part. But I wanted to let you know about a breed I got this year that I am very impressed with. At the feed store this spring, we had to buy a minimum of 6chicks. We got 5 of the chick breeds I wanted, then I let my daughter pick out one. Not knowing anything about this breed, she picked out a Dixie Rainbow. Dixie was the smallest chick. She grew incredibly quick. She is very solid now & would make a nice dinner. However, we are keeping her a couple years for eggs. Check out the breed Dixie Rainbow though.
Some people have problems ordering from a hatchery, but essentially that is where the vast majority of the birds we (as in all of us) buy come from. It looks like cackle is a reputable business. Give it a try and post back.
