The way I look at it, my eggs are free. I built my coop and bought my supplies and feed for my pet chickens, just like you would for a dog or cat.... so the eggs are a bonus! I still would have my chickies even if they didn't lay eggs!

Chickens EVERYONE should have 2

I started for eggs and fell in love with my girls.... Love the Awk Awk questions .... and the little pluck pluck noises they make when there is something good to eat.... And the Egg song.... And there is nothing so adorable as a Broody hen with a passle of chicklettes.

My last flock was more than thirty hens and roos... Somewhere along the line I Fell in LOVE with roos.... Love their Doodle doos and lively antics and the "pecking order" deal....

I also have Guinea Fowl and they have their own silly ness... Like the time I came out in a PINK bathrobe.... OMY GAWD they were instantly on the roof screaming Alarm Alarm Alarm.... The hens scurried for cover... you see Guineas are good first alert alarms...

Of course I have the acreage for Guinea fowl because they are in the decible range loud. I live by the border so knowing when unfamiliar people are about is a good thing.

My needs have changed and my next flock will be supporting me on a fixed income.... So I will be raising for eggs but not so much I will be raising Guineas for Keets to sell ... and a Batch of Cornish Cross for the years worth of meat. As well as a few Muscovies for eggs and meat..

I can't choose which aspect I like most. I LOVE EVERYTHING about having chickens (and other poultry).
It started out as a means for egg and meat self sufficiency, with an interest in heritage breeds.
Then we tried day olds and fell in love with the fluffies. So we tried hatching and absolutely love that part...... And of course that led to the interest of breeding rare or heritage breeds, which has me interested in showing.
I just can't choose and would click every option if I could!

(Edited auto predict mistake, can't let it slide.... CDO)

I agree with everyone above as I enjoy both the eggs and the companionship and the joy they bring to me.

No doubt about it, I most enjoy their companionship. My girls (and boy) are quite tame, cuddly, and friendly both with us and strangers, probably due to the fact that they were raised with constant affection. There's nothing more precious than walking outside and having a whole herd of birds come running to greet you with ever cheerful expressions!

I can't say companionship since my birds prefer to remain aloof with humans and other non-chicken animals.
I love the eggs, breeding to improve an extremely rare breed, manure for the garden, the flavor of the meat and the eye candy in the field.
