Hello,

We have been considering getting chickens, but have also been considering quail. I am joining the forum to learn more about the unique challenges we may face in keeping birds in the climate of the Sonoran Desert.

I look forward to hearing the advice of those more experienced.

( I see someone else from Phoenix just joined the forum a couple days ago. We are in the outskirts of Phoenix.)

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about quail (never had any), but they are sure cute little birds. You can get in contact with our quail experts at https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/48/quail. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your quail.

Welcome to BYC! This is a great place to find out all things bird. If you have specific questions, just post. You could also try using the Search box right under the BYC logo for ideas on how to deal with heat issues.

We're in FL and have heat too, plus a lot of humidity. Between those 2 factors, for example, today we ended up with a heat index of about 98 degrees. Our chickens are in a covered run during the day and we frequently change their water to keep it fresh, plus I wet the floor down so they can feel a bit cooler. Cold treats are always welcome too! In their coop, there are plenty of windows and a big fan to keep the air flowing.

Glad to have you here, let us know what you end up with...chickens or quail.

You can connect with others in your state thread here....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/31227/arizona-chickens

You have been given lots of great links to follow from the others. I keep Bobwhite quail and chickens. Quail are not at all like chickens and require a bit more attention to detail. Fun little birds, but some of them are a challenge to keep. Good luck and welcome to our flock!

Your best bet would be to subscribe to your state thread and ask your questions there.

They would know the best breeds for the climate,. Where to get your feed & supplies, and what type of coop and run you need .

I knew someone in Phoenix and they had an air conditioned coop. It doesn't have to be kept cold. Even 10 degrees less than the outside temperature will feel much cooler inside.

You need shade, shade and more shade - natural or artificial. If no a/c fans kept out of chickens reach will help a lot. Moving air always feels cooler than stagnant.

Frequent changes of cold water, misting hoses, frozen gallon water jugs set around so birds can be near them helps mightily. Some birds like to stand in shallow water to cool off their feet.
