handicaped chickens

We've had several "handicapped" chickens throughout the years, including crossed beaks, chicks that never grow, and blinded eyes. Currently we have a hen with limited vision in one eye, a rooster with an eye that is blind, and a duck with limited vision in both eyes. But I think Pirate is the most special.

Pirate is a Barred Rock chick that hatched about a month or two ago. We realized as soon as we brought her inside that she literally was missing an eye. Her beak was also slightly crossed. I was worrying that she just wouldn't make it.

But today Pirate is a happy, friendly chick. She is the only chick that keeps running after me for several yards after I walk away. She doesn't seem to realize that she's blind or cross-beaked, and gets along just as well as any of the others, though she has a slight difficulty drinking and doesn't always see things that the others do.

Here is Pirate's good eye. You can see her slightly crossed-beak in this one.

And here is her... uh... no eye. :p

I currently have two 'handicapped' roos in my coop right now.

Pancake (on the left) is seven years old and had become completely blind. His eyesight started failing last fall, and now he lives in his own small pen with Fred, a (female) Rhode Island Red who is actually half-white. Pancake relies on Fred for guidance, usually sticking by her side or against the side of the pen. When he hears her eat or drink, he'll slowly amble over, head held low, until he gets close enough where he can either step on the bowls with his feet or take a few pecks at the ground to find food and water. They get along quite well, and remind me a bit of an old married couple.

Oreo has a bunch of problems relating to age. He currently suffers from some form of Arthritis and is slowly going blind and possibly deaf as well. He injured one eye years ago in a fight and now the other one is getting lost under the wrinkles in his face. He has some ear issues which I've had difficulty in treating. He's slowing down a lot and lives with the banties now, but he seems quite happy and still tries to boss some of the smaller birds around, mostly without success.

this is my blind roo ,,,, someone shot him through the head after he got out 1 day,, found him the next morning in the field standing there with his head hung down

This is a 12 week old RIR that a friend's father gave us. It was either us or the stew pot. Seems she was injured at about 2-weeks old. A child mishandled her and her right leg was injured. Now the leg sticks out to the side. No use to put weight on, but she uses it for balance as she hops and flops along. I laid in the grass near her and she came over and laid down to snuggle and nap. She is an absolute sweetheart. We're looking into seeing if she can be fixed or not.

Here's a little video of her:
