I am refurbishing an old coop and I am not sure what to do with the windows. I am thinking about stapling rabbit wire over them and the painting some plywood to use for covers when it rains. Will the plywood warp and rot out fast? is there something better to use? There are lots of critters around my house and I think regular screens that come with regular windows would get torn open. Anyhow I am not sure what the best way to go would be.

If I could do it again, (pre-made coop with regular windows) I would make my window openings on a hinged closure that way I can control the ventilation. Mine are facing the worst of the wind right now. I attached hardware cloth to mine but I also have a 2x4 welded wire pen up against them.)

I use old single pane windows in my coop. You can often get them for free off of Craigslist. Some of mine are fixed, non working windows, which add light and heat (in winter) but I make sure to have working ones on opposite ends to each other so I can get proper ventilation. I cover the inside of the windows with 1/2" hardware wire as a screen to keep out any predators when the windows are open (90% of the time, they are only closed when it is snowing).

If you are concerned about driving rain, you can remove the pane from the frame, and hinge it at the top, allowing it to swing open at the bottom. This would prevent any rain from coming in.

windows hinged at the top, over lapse the wall and swing out, so you can open them without going in the coop. Install a drip edge (I cut it out of piece lumber and painted) over the top.

What material did you use for the windows? did you use plywood? did the windows just overlap at the bottom and how much overlap? What did you use to hold the open?

Here is a photo from my profile. As you can see, the window sits on the face of the wall, not flush, with over lap (happens to be 1" but it is entirely your preference) on all 4 sides. A simple latch at the bottom. The window is propped open with twigs. Of course, 1/2" hardware cloth on the inside.

The door is installed the same way with hinges on the side.

Curious is there an advantage to overlap vs flush?
