Galvanized Steel vs. Plastic Waterer?

I have been using a 4 gallon plastic waterer for about 4 months now. I'm not totally satisfied with it. My chickens get dirt and poop in the bottom tray, and a few bugs have gotten inside somehow. I do clean it, and sometimes I add a little apple cider vinegar to the water, but it seems a little slimy. I just would like a cleaner option.
So, today I got a 2 gallon galvanized steel waterer. I have been washing it out with a mild soap and hot water like the directions say, but it still seems there is a metallic odor that won't come out. I'm going to let it soak in water for a while and maybe the odor will go away eventually.
I'm just wondering if anyone has thoughts on these, and if there is a better option out there?

I prefer the plastic because it can be cleaned with a spash of bleach and just a few minute's soaking. I used to use a metal one, until it got dented and difficult to put together.. Eventually they do rust, and they can get tricky to use if the get bent or dented. Also, you can't put vinegar in them I don't have trouble with dirt on the tray; i set mine on a concrete block, change daily, and soak with a bit of bleach weekly. If they perch on top of it, you can glue a funnel upside down. But a lot of people use the metal; personal choice.

I agree. I have also noticed that the metal is prone to leaking all over!

OK, great, thanks to you all! Maybe then I will just return the metal feeder and use the plastic one until I can look into making one with nipples.
