ayam cemani x orpington chicks 1 spraddle legged?

I changed their brooder box again and have them on pine shavings now. They're getting big!

The ones that are orpington leaning looking have pink skin, the ayam cemani leaning ones have black skin.

One of the Cemani I believe is a roo. It doesn't have tail feathers & is quite big with a large wide stance and yes, a comb forming at less than 3 weeks old. Quite a noticeable one at that too!

I stopped using the heat lamp. I might move them out to the barn this week. I've been sucking up hard to my awesome bf by cooking yummy food, last night was grass fed organic beef short ribs korean bbq style and made with the slow cooker. So, here's to hoping he'll build me the big brooder box of my dreams out of the 3 doors we have in the garage and use a small length of hardware cloth to put on top to keep chicks inside. B/c I need to get ready for 12 bresse chicks in less than 2 weeks!

These are the teensy weensie chicks

they're getting so big!

My bf said today that he's thinking of making a tractor for my haffies and ayam cemani chicks tonight! *happy dance* they look so curious and wanting to play!

Lightchick- they are getting so big and curious! They are trying to escape the brooder box every chance they get!

So it looks like we better get a little tractor coop going for the front yard while we build out the big coop for my bresse, ayam cemanis and the haffies. I might move the 1 haffie pullet to my flock of laying chickens, she's got nice mottled coloring in her feathers already when she's big enough to go in there.

I saw that on the caponizing thread you mentioned that you were planning on eating any ayam cemani roosters you have. Why do you want to eat such a rare breed? Can't you just sell/give away any roosters you get? I'm sure lot's of people would want such a pretty breed.
Just a question.
My chicks would jump out of their brooder all the time! Lol

I'm keeping 1 ayam cemani rooster, but none of the ones I have now are worth keeping for breeding due to silver leakage and only underside of the tongue is black - not suitable for breeding. Fibromelanistic meat has different properties than regular chicken meat, and it's one of the reasons I took these "haffies", was to research their color patterns and meat qualities... they are spoiled rotten with the best food, treatment etc. They live happy lives :) I wish I could keep them all, but I am raising some of my chickens for meat for myself and my family. These chickens live a far better life with me than chicken I can buy at the store with knowing that they got the best organic food, fresh air, sunshine and not all crammed together.

Some of these might make it into my layer flock. I'm getting more of these chicks all the time anyways... my friend just hatched out another 10 with 20 more in 1 incubator and 5 more in another, and collects 3 more eggs daily.. so there are plenty more!

And she's getting in a juvenile pair from greenfire farms this week or next week which will give us more breeding stock... ppl who want them can buy hatching eggs from my friend here on byc, but I can't keep every chick that hatches.. and since I'm eating the roos not suited for breeding, it's better to caponize the roos not for breeding to 1 make them not crow 2 grow better meat 3 no fighting within my roos. Since its their destiny not to be breed, but to feed me, it makes more sense to do that in the way that lets them live the best longest life I can provide them and be very grateful for the nourishment they will give me, as I nourish them their entire lives. Circle of life and all.

Ahhhh. OK. Got it. Do you know how to raise meat chicks slow enough so that they can live a long happy life? I saw some at a store today and wanted to save one. But first I want to know if it's possible for them to actually live past their 8 weeks of live.

It depends on the breed of chicken I think lightchick. If they are regular breed chickens like barred rock or leghorn it's not an issue raising them past 8 weeks, but cornish x is a different story.

These chicks I have are ayam cemani with an orpington rooster daddy. Some of these are purebreed ayam cemani. These aren't "broiler" or cornish x or rangers, so these could live a very long time. But since I will not be keeping any roosters I have of these chicks, and crowing is a problem I can't have. A decrowing surgery is my other option, but I will only do that with roosters that are good breeding stock. Any others will become capons.

I'm trying not to get more chicks until my white bresse arrive, then I will add more haffies and ayam cemani from my friend's flock. But no more than 8 more than I have now. Yeah right.

I think that you need to limit their acess to food so that they don't eat themselves silly into a heart attack or something... that's not an issue with my chicks atm as they aren't cornish rock.
