After trying out 3 or 4 different automatic watering troughs and wasting lots of time and money, I finally found one that:
1. works reliably
2. Doesn't overfill
3. Standard hose connection
4. Easy to dump
5. Plastic and not galvanized

I tried products from Lees Feed and online and finally the one! it comes in 18, 24, 30 and 36 inch models. there is only one thing I would change on it but I'm very happy with this product from CoopsnMore on EBay.

If you look at the chicken guard on the top of the unit, you will see a rod going across the middle to hold the guard down. You can't take it off to remove the wire cage to clean it out easily. I dump mine out weekly and a high pressure hose cleans it well without removing the guard. But I wish I could simply remove the wire cage.

Unfortunately this item is no longer being manufactured. I called the company that made it and they are growing so rapidly that they no longer have room on their floor for hand assembly. They are working on stocking this product again by finding an off-shore mfgr. but it definitely won't be available in the short term. Too bad... I searched the internet for something similar and this is all I can find but it looks like it attached to a faucet - not certain it attaches to a garden hose... Anyone else find anything similar? http://usmegastore.com/product/gqf-...e&source=ads&gclid=CLX3gZqJ8c0CFQinaQodAoMBGQ

I bought a $15 small "pond" about 18" across and 30" long. The chickens loved it until the ducks started swimming in it. The ducks would splash all the water out so I added an automatic waterer $10 to the side and ran a garden hose. The water would get dirty because of the ducks so I put s wire grid top over it to keep the ducks from swimming there (they do have 3 other "ponds" to swim in including a 600 gallon tank I bought them, but they still liked this little one best. The wire grid was perfect. Everyone could drink out of it but couldn't swim in it. :)
