When I went out to feed everything this morning, I noticed my six month old runner/runner mix didn't come over to greet me like she normally does. I found her laying down just outside of their house, and after prodding her for a minute, offering her food, and finally just standing her up, I determind something is wrong with her feet. I took her inside and let her swim a bit before I attempted to check her feet out, and found a small scan on the bottom of the bad leg, and a knotted up scabby area on the one she's putting pressure on. Does this look like bumblefoot? Is so, how do I treat it? If not, any ideas as to what it is?

(Forgot to mention her feet are also very red.) They were not like this yesterday and she was walking fine. Bumblefoot?

Usually when you see a raised area and looks to be a puncher of some kind it's probably some infection[bumble foot] you off to a good start. washing her off real good, now start soaking the foot in some Warm Epsom salt water, use something like a bucket where you can put both legs into it [hold on to her]and she can't drink the water since ES is a laxative also. But the ES will help draw the bumble to the top soak at least 1-2X a day 1/2 cup ES to 1 gal of warm water. Then get if you don't already have some Clear[colorless] iodine Wilmat and other pharmacy carry it. after soaking and foot is dry use a cotton ball or tip and make sure to cover top and bottom of foot where the bumble is. Let this dry them place her in a soft area where she won't have to do alot of walking and it stays fairly clean. Soak daily but only use the colorless iodine ever other day. most likely y before a week is up you'll be able to pick off any scab and the bumble will come right out. Might have to use sterile tweezers and pull it out it will be cottage cheese consistency. please keep us updated on progress. I am treating a hen same way right now.

Thanks! Her feet have been soaked and some all purpose pet balm put on there. She's all wrapped up and sitting on a blanket slinging her food everywhere lol

They love to sling their food. lol try to get the colorless iodine it's very important in the treatment of bumble foot.

Colorless iodine has been retrieved! I also had to take the puppy to the vet for shots so while I was there, I asked if he knew of anything that would help and he said baytril helps and to put 1 cc per gallon in their water. Nibbles seems to be doing better since her treatment and is now standing even though she doesn't want to walk. Also, my bathroom walls are now covered with duck feed

Oh good you got the baytril be sure to give her some probiotics in her feed after she is through with the antibiotic. feed stores carry it in powder form. it will help get her tummy flora back in shape. I had 2 gosling in the house for 3 weeks back in early summer it took a while to get the ff off my walls and furniture but I did.

keep us updated on how she is doing.

Curious question

what is it about colored iodine that's not good for ducks/chickens? Does the dye irritate their skin?
Iodine is naturally colored I don't think there is anything wrong with using it with our flocks but it's what's in the colorless that makes the difference in treating bumble foot, ammonium. it draws along with the iodine and helps to heal. but still only use the decolorized every other day or every 2 days.
