I bought 6, 4 day old BO chickens in April, they will be 5 months old soon,i ended up with 2 possible 3 rooster and 3 hens,1 of the roosters started crowing at 2 months old and the 2nd rooster started crowing a few weeks ago,the 1st crower has already started mating 1 and only 1 of the girls, this 1 hen started this behavior last night I went to put them up and only 5 came,i found the hen under the floor of the addition we are making, then today I let them out this morning and could not find her then she appeared not sure where from this time, and here is where my concern is,i went out to give them something cold,we are in a lot of heat, and she was pacing the run wanting out,i was so worried about her being stressed so I stood in the run with them while they ate she calmed down went in the coop came out and started pacing again,so I let them out,she made a beline toward my plants total coverage and thick leaves, and layed down,i watched her for a bit,she just layed there,i went out and checked on her again and she was plucking and putting grass leaves on her back,is she ok what is going on,she is the only one doing this, and should I think about going down to only 1 rooster UPDATE......SHE LAID AN EGG...OH MY GOODNESS MY 1ST EGG AND IT SCARED THE FIRE OUT OF ME...WOOHOO

I was so "into" reading your post I didn't notice your update!!! But YES! That's exactly what she was doing...going crazy trying to figure out "what the heck is happening back there?" !!!

My second girl to lay still does it, so don't be alarmed if yours does, too. Mine will run into the coop, bwok her fool head off like she's dying, then outta the coop she goes. Then back to the coop, bwoking and back outta the coop. She'll do this for what seems like an eternity! Then all of a sudden she gets real quiet for about 20 minutes or so, and then the egg song hits the air waves!! My #1 layer is such a 'lady' ... she goes into the nest box, talks quietly to herself, lays her egg, sounds off the egg song very briefly, and she's done. My #2 layer is TOTALLY NEUROTIC!!!

Your ladies and my ladies must be on the same "train of thought" today! Right now I have one of the girls singing the egg song...but no EGG!! I've gone out there twice! I'm watching the webcam and she's in there just singing her little heart out. But the strange thing is, it's not #2 hen...that's my "neurotic hen" the one that just plain bwoks 24/7....this is a different-sounding egg song, so I think it's one of the two remaining girls that haven't laid yet. So it looks like I'll be doing the "waiting game" yet again...aaack!!

AH thank you so much,i am new at this,i bought these babies when they were 4 days old, bought 6,3 are roosters...scary...and 3 are hens, they were all suppose to be buff orpingtons but I believe my hens are sex links, how much problems am I going to have out of the 3 roosters and 3 hens,in February I will be buying more but until then I suppose I just need to keep my fingers crossed

I guess the first question is this...do you really 'need' a rooster? Are you planning on breeding? With only 3 hens you should only have one rooster...max. Why? Because more than one with so few hens the roosters will fight for 'territory' and they will over-mate with your girls and that could turn bloody, and you don't want that. Time to cull I think! I know it's hard, you raised them from babies, but the facts are what they are...chin up!!!

that is what I told my husband,he wants to build a separate pen for them,i believe they are going to have to be put on the dinner table, and I bought these a TCS they do not sex them, they also sold me them all as buff orpingtons, that is the breed I wanted, well I got 1/2 orpingions and all BO are male, the other 3,hens,i believe are sex links

Hmmmm, why spend money to build a pen for roosters ... yes, I agree, crockpot time! Too bad on the breed screwup, but I bet you still love 'em!! Have a great evening, I'm off to bed...see you on the forum!!
