I think God played a cruel joke on us by creating goat heads. Anyone know how to get rid of them? If you don't know what they are, consider yourself lucky not to have stepped on one in the middle of the night!

Oh, those things are wicked! The dog is always getting them stuck to his pads. Thankfully I have never stepped on one, but I have gotten them stuck to my fingers. Wow, such a tiny thing with such a painful poke!!

I am not sure how to get rid of them either. We don't have them in the yard, but they do grow up the road a bit. Good luck getting rid of them! :)

I hate roundup. Ruins what little nice dirt I have. I keep pulling them but this year has been really bad with all the rain we have gotten. Can I burn them?

Use a hoe on them and get them while they are growing.

There are Herbacides that only attack broad leafed plants you can use those without disturbing grasses and without sterilizing the soil. Pluck up one and haul it to the local nursery they may have an Herbacide just perfect for you. These types of Herbacides will also need to be reapplied because you will always miss a few seeds.

Oh and yes even though Goat head leaves are teeny they are still considered a broad leaf or NON grass.

I have stepped on Goat heads that have gone completely through my flip flops.... I know your pain.

OMG I hate these things! We have goat heads down to just a small area thankfully not close to the house. I hated walking barefoot in the house and finding one that got in the carpet tracked in on someones shoes!!:barnie

We sprayed with Round up
Sprayed with vinegar
Sprayed with gasoline, yeh we did

What worked was scorched earth, we didn't have lawn anyway just various weeds, bunch grass and sage brush. Raked everything out leaving just stubs of all the weeds. Then borrowed a propane torch (Niece called it a flame thrower) had propane tank strapped down to a wagon carrying the wand. We burnt EVERYTHING. Once a week for a month we burnt anything that popped up attempting to be green. Managed to get them away from the house, other buildings and most of driveway edges.

It has been a few years and they are slowly creeping back toward the house :( When it is wet enough to not start a wildfire time to burn it all again. Having grass for a lawn doesn't even keep it out.

Our whole property is nice & gren. From a distance it looks pretty, but closer up you realize it is ALL goatheads! We are gonna have to burn it all I guess.

Around here it's more commonly known, rightly or wrongly, as "puncture weed" but it's the exact same plant - no mistaking that notorious little triangle of pain. It will puncture bike tires and when Ken's uncle lived across the street and drove his scooter through the vacant field next to his house it even nailed his scooter tires.....those things are not cheap to replace, either! Most of the kids here have tubeless tires on their bikes. Hate that stuff! Once in awhile one will try to get started here in the yard but Ken is so fastidious about the grass that it never gets far enough along in life to flower, let alone produce seed heads. He usually hits it with the propane flame thrower thingy we inherited from his uncle. The grass where it's growing usually protests this process, but it comes back and the puncture weed doesn't so the grass just has to learn to deal with an occasional singeing!

My parents used to have my brother & me pull the things by hand (with gloves on!). They'd pay us a little for every garbage bag full. There's almost none on the property now.
