Nope, not a BSL male. The wings should have barring on them, as feathered out as that one is already. May not be a true head spot, just a lighter area, a smudge or something. A head spot means it's a barred bird and that one isn't. I've never seen a barred bird that feathered in solid black and got barring later. If that one does, it will be the very first.

Well I guess we are all gonna be surprised!
You never know, do you? I'd love to see this same chick in a couple of weeks to see if it developed any barring. I've had chicks with lighter head areas that were not true head spots that designate a barring gene, so I suspect that may be the case here, but we shall see!

True mystery, eh? I keep looking through the MMM catalog for black chicks available in August and there's only a few!
Could it be the "exotic" chick they throw in? I thought that would be our Turken--but that's listed under standard breeds. Would they consider Turkens "exotic?"

They might consider a Turken exotic, but trust me, that isn't one of those. You'd know a Turken. Most hatcheries consider EEs as "exotic"(hardly, right?) and include EE cockerels as their free extra chick, but that isn't one of those, either.

No, I have one Turken (who was easy to notice from the get-go!). He's buff with black markings. Not this guy!!
I guess I was thinking he was the "exotic" chick they threw in?
Now I'm curious as to what this pretty much solid black chick is!
I have 5 or 6 brown and black "chipmunk" looking chicks I was thinking were EE's or Welsummers...they wouldn't give me that many of what they consider "exotic" would they?
Who knows! I'll post more pics each week of my mystery chicks til I know...probably not doing straight-run next time! I'm sure my big, calm favorites are the boys!!!
